Atlanta Blaze Select Duke's Myles Jones No.1 Overall in 2016 MLL Collegiate Draft

March 18, 2016
Baltimore, MD– The 2016 MLL Collegiate Draft presented by Cascade Lacrosse took place on Friday afternoon in the Baltimore Hilton's Holiday Ballroom in conjunction with the US Lacrosse Convention. Due to the severe weather conditions in the area, the draft was rescheduled from the original 8:30 pm start time to 2:00 pm.

With the first overall selection in the draft, the Atlanta Blaze selected Myles Jones, midfielder from Duke University. Jones wrapped up a record-breaking season last year with his 77 points (40g, 37a) topping the list of points by a midfielder in Duke single-season history. Jones joins Ned Crotty as Blue Devils selected as the No. 1 overall pick of the MLL Collegiate Draft. Atlanta Blaze also drafted midfielder Deemer Class (No. 10) and Case Matheis (No. 53) from Duke.

The 16th Collegiate Draft began with three trades involving five different teams. With the first tade, the Boston Cannons sent defenseman Scott Ratliff along with their No. 15 pick of the 2016 Collegiate Draft and their 3rd pick of the Supplemental Draft to the Atlanta Blaze. Ratliff will reunite with Coach John Tucker as the Blaze welcome home the Georgia native. The Blaze selected Tyler Albrecht, midfielder from Loyola University (MD) with the No. 15 pick.

Both the second and third trades involved the Chesapeake Bayhawks. The Bayhawks sent attackman Nikko Pontrello to the Florida Launch in exchange for the No. 22 pick of the 2016 Collegiate Draft. With this pick, the Bayhawks selected John Maloney, midfielder from the University of Albany. Prior to the draft, the Bayhawks also traded their No. 11 pick of the 2016 Collegiate Draft and their 4th pick of the 2017 Supplemental Draft to the Ohio Machine. The Machine sent defenseman Dana Wilber to Chesapeake and selected goalie Kyle Bernlohr from the University of Maryland with the No. 11 pick.

Overall, 70 college seniors were selected over eight rounds with the University of Maryland leading the way. Marquette University saw their first player selected in MLL history with the Launch selecting Liam Byrnes (No. 21).
