HEADstrong founder Nicholas Colleluori once said "When I am able to be at the games, on the field and watching my team from the sidelines, it's like all that I've been going through really doesn't matter because when I am on the lacrosse field, I am just HEAD, things are normal and I don't have cancer."
Colleluori was a Division I lacrosse player entering his sophomore year at Hofstra University when he was terminally diagnosed with cancer. His public fight from the sidelines captivated the nation and from his hospital bed he created the HEADstrong Foundation. Colleluori hosted the first HEADstrong event in conjunction with Major League Lacrosse in 2005 and in 2012 the league honored Colleluori formally at the MLL All-Star Game. Now in 2018, the league is making a push to get its players, teams and fans behind Lacrosse Mustache Madness, a campaign that started with Colleluori growing his mustache while fighting cancer.
After enduring 14 months of advanced treatment, Colleluori tossed his razor and grew a mustache in the last weeks of his life as a way to take focus off of his apparent weight loss and declining physical appearance. In an uncontrollable situation, his mustache was a humorous way for him to somewhat feel “normal” again. Unfortunately, weeks later Colleluori would succumb to the disease at the untimely age of 21.
In 2009, Ken Clausen created Lacrosse Mustache Madness as a way to pay homage to Nick Colleluori and support the HEADstrong Foundation. Since then more than 8,000 student-athletes have tossed their razors, emulating the last 6 weeks of Colleluori's life and supporting his vision which continues to play a vital role for families across the country overcome by cancer. Lacrosse Mustache Madness has become a fall tradition in the game having raised more than $1,000,000 to improve the lives of families affected by the disease. The campaign runs through November 28th which is the anniversary of Colleluori's passing.
There is still plenty of time to GET GROWING.
