Game Notes: New York - Chesapeake

The New York Lizards take MLL into New York City as they host the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Thursday, June 6 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network from Carl Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, making it the first ever MLL game to be played in New York City.

The Lizards hope to bounce back from the 14-12 decision against the Charlotte Hounds last Friday, May 31.

The Lizards are led by arguably the best attack trio in the MLL with newly activated Rob Pannell, and two year veterans Matt Gibson, and Mark Matthews. The three recorded a total of six points with five goals and one assist, the majority coming from Cascade Rookie of the Week Pannell (3, 1), in the loss to the Hounds. At midfield, Stephen Peyser recorded four points with three goals including one 2 point goal. Greg Gurenlian posted an impressive performance winning 19 of 29 face-offs.  Lizards fan can also expect to see 2013 draftee and Syracuse product JoJo Marasco who has been activated this week as he looks to extend his lacrosse career past the collegiate level after losing 16-10 in the NCAA National Championship.

The Bayhawks currently have a 3-2 record and hope to stop their two- game losing streak. They were handed their first loss against Boston May 18 after the Cannons scored a thrilling overtime goal. Chesapeake had a similar fate last Saturday, June 1 as they lost in overtime again to the Hamilton Nationals.

The 2012 MLL Champions look to hold onto their third place standing, led by Ben Rubeor who has recorded 15 goals and two assists in five games and Matt Mackrides who has notched 10 goals and three assists.  Nicky Polanco leads the ‘Hawks defense with 17 ground balls.

The Bayhawks have already won the first match against New York this season by defeating the Lizards 9-3, May 4. Rubeor recorded seven goals for Chesapeake in that game. In the 2012 series, the Bayhawks picked up the first game March 28, winning 13-11 with three goals including one 2-point goal and an assist from Ben Hunt. The Bayhawks also won the second match August 4 with a score of 13-6 with Hunt having another stellar performance scoring four points and Kip Turner saving ten shots for the winners.

Next, the Lizards will finish their homestand when the Hamilton Nationals visit Thursday, June 13, at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island in New York City at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast regionally and can be found online at The Bayhawks will return home to take on the Denver Outlaws ina nationally televised CBS Sports Network game, Saturday June 15, at 6:30pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
