PREVIEW: Nationals at Machine

March 18, 2016
Hamilton Nationals at Chicago Machine

Thursday, May 23, 2013 – 7:30 p.m. (ET) – Selby Stadium

National TV: CBS Sports Network

Game Notes: Hamilton - Ohio

The Ohio Machine plays host to the Hamilton Nationals on Thursday in a nationally televised game,  that features two teams on opposite ends of the league standings.

The game faces off at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network following ‘Inside the MLL’, the League’s weekly magazine show.

This will be the first of two match ups between the teams, as Ohio enters the game winless in its first three games, while the Nationals hope to remain undefeated after starting the season 3-0.

Fans will have a chance to catch a glimpse of some of the 2013 newcomers as both teams have activated several 2013 MLL Collegiate Draftees including Loyola’s Josh Hawkins for Hamilton and UNC’s Marcus Holman for the Machine.

Ohio dropped a 14-8 decision to the New York Lizards in the first game of the homestand on Saturday, May 18, in the third straight game that the Machine had failed to score in double digits. The team is led on offense by second-year attackman Steele Stanwick, who has five points on two goals and three helpers. Midfielder Joe Cummings has also provided offense for the Machine, sitting second on the team with four points on two goals and two assists. Saturday marked the second straight game the Machine defense has allowed 14 goals, ranking them  sixth in the league in goals against average, allowing 13.67 per contest.

The Nationals come into the game looking for their fourth straight victory to start the 2013 campaign. After beating the Boston Cannons 15-8 in the season opener, Hamilton has won consecutive one-goal games, defeating the New York Lizards 12-11 on May 11 before edging the Charlotte Hounds 16-15 in overtime on May 17 on a Matt Dolente goal seven seconds into the extra session.

On offense, the Nationals are led by midfielder Kevin Crowley, who has 14 points on seven goals and six assists, including one two-point goal. Attackman Kevin Cunningham adds another dimension to the Nationals attack, and has five goals and five assists on the season.

Another focal point of the offense is Joe Walters, who scored three goals and had two assists in his first game of the season against the Hounds. Defensively, Hamilton ranks fourth in the league in goals against, allowing 10.3 per game, while Brett Queener and Evan Kirk have split the majority of time in cage.

The two teams split the season series in 2012, which was played in back-to-back days on July 13 and 14. Ohio took the first game by a 13-12 score thanks in large part to Chazz Woodson’s four assist performance. The Following day, Hamilton earned a 14-10 win behind Garrett Billings’ five point game.

Next, Hamilton will continue its road trip when it pays a visit to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and the Chesapeake Bayhaws on Saturday, June 1. Ohio will head on the road to play the Rochester Rattlers on Sunday, June 2 at Sahlen’s Stadium. Both games will be televised live nationally on CBS Sports Network.
