ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Midfielder Roy Lang scored the game-winning goal just over three minutes into the overtime period as the Rochester Rattlers overcame a late rally to hand the defending MLL champion Boston Cannons their first loss of the season, a 17-16 overtime verdict at Sahlen's Stadium on Friday evening.

Lang gave the Rattlers the victory when he scored his third goal of the season, an unassisted marker past goalkeeper Jordan Burke with 6:57 left in the overtime period.

Led by a goal and an assist from attackman Matt Poskay, the Cannons jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first 13 minutes of the first quarter. However, attackman Ned Crotty scored with 1:15 remaining in the period to trim the margin to 4-3.

The teams traded goals four times in the second quarter, including a two-point goal by Boston midfielder Kevin Buchanan, before Kevin Drew tallied an unassisted goal with just six seconds left to close the gap to 9-7 at the intermission.

After the teams exchanged goals to open the third quarter, the Rattlers used a three-goal spurt over a two-minute span to take an 11-10 lead with 7:04 remaining in the stanza. A goal by Buchanan evened the score at 11-11 before the Rattlers scored three straight points, including a two-point goal by midfielder Matt Striebel, to end the third quarter with a 14-11 advantage.

The Cannons used a pair of goals from midfielders Paul Rabil and Bill McGlone to close the gap to 14-13 before back-to-back goals from Striebel and Jordan MacIntosh extended the Rattlers' cushion to 16-13.

But, the Cannons scored three straight goals to tie the game at 16-16 and force the extra period. After midfielder Chris Eck scored an unassisted goal with 8:55 left, midfielder Mike Stone trimmed the margin to 16-15 with an unassisted goal just 42 seconds later.

With 3:10 remaining, midfielder Paul Rabil tallied an unassisted goal to even the score at 16-16, setting up the Rattlers' heroics.

Crotty was named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game after scoring three goals with two assists for Rochester while Striebel added three goals, including a two-point marker, with an assist. Goalkeeper John Galloway made 17 saves, including eight in the fourth quarter, for the Rattlers.

Buchanan led the Cannons in a losing effort by scoring five goals, including a two-point marker, with an assist while Rabil added three goals with two assists.
