RECAP: Ohio 15 - Charlotte 8

March 18, 2016

It was the newcomers opening the new season for the Machine, as both Kyle Harrison and Peter Baum registered hat tricks in Ohio’s 15-8 win over the Charlotte Hounds.

The first quarter proved to be all Ohio as the Machine outscored Charlotte 6-0 in the opening frame. It was the veteran Harrison opening the scoring just 45 seconds in, which led to five different scorers finding the back of the net for the Machine. Harrison capped off the scoring in the quarter with an absolute laser beam in the top-right corner with just 1.2 seconds left to beat the buzzer.

Charlotte had plenty of trouble clearing the ball in the early going, but whenever they did get shots off, Scott Rodgers held strong for the Machine. The 6-5, 255-pound netminder made six saves before the Hounds finally scored over 20 minutes into the game. Charlotte ended up with four of the five goals in the second quarter, as Ohio took a 7-4 lead into halftime.

In the third, it was the Hounds who made their run, as they scored five straight goals – two from Ryan Young – to get the score within one. Ohio responded with three of their own and eventually led 12-8 after three, thanks to both Baum and Harrison finishing off their hat tricks.

Ohio added three more goals in an uneventful final frame, with Jake Bernhardt notching the hat trick. The Machine held Charlotte off the board in both the first and fourth quarters. Ohio also kept Matt Danowski without a goal, holding him to just one assist in the contest.

For secondary scoring, Marcus Holman notched two goals and two assists for the Machine, coming off his impressive rookie year. Jim Connolly, Erik Krum and Kevin Cooper were the other goal scorers for Ohio, while Young, Matt White and Joe Cummings each had two for the Hounds.

Rodgers proved massive in net for the Machine, ending the game with an amazing 23 saves. Ohio also won the battle in the faceoff ‘x,’ winning 17-of-27 in the game. Eric OBrien won 9-of-14 while offseason addition Matt Dolente went 8-for-13.

Next time out, the Hounds will take on the newest MLL squad – the Florida Launch – at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday on the league’s YouTube channel. Ohio will continue on the road as they face off against Denver on Sunday, May 4, at 5:00 p.m. on and several regional broadcasts.
