Team USA

Head Coach Richie Mead (Furman University)

On his team’s performance: “There was the competitive thing that was going to happen, we were trying to do the things that we practiced. I thought that it was a really well-played game. I thought the MLL guys played well, and we did too. We played well in the first half, but didn’t shoot the ball well, a credit to their goaltender. We did a good job of getting the game tied and getting the winning goal down the stretch. Anytime you win a game like that you are fortunate to win. It was a great opportunity for us to play against a high caliber opponent, which I’m not sure we will play against a better team than this.”

On making roster decisions: “We are going to have to go back and look at the film. Generally, the initial impression as that we have to make some decisions on some guys. And although one game does not dictate the whole process, we got some questions answered that's going to help us move forward.”

On his All-Star expectations: “The whole time our expectation was to just get better. I think our guys played tight tonight. Guys were trying to make the team. I think you could feel that and I’ve felt it all week. It’s very difficult for the players to be in this position. I thought the MLL Team played loose. Our expectation is to put this team together finally, and then move forward.”

Coca-Cola All-Star MVP Rob Pannell (New York Lizards)

On scoring the game winning goal: “There was 15 seconds left, I had the ball in my stick. It was a rough game for me dodging all around. I had some good looks, but I wasn’t able to get to the goals. We were a little slow on offense. With 15 seconds left I had to go to the goal. I made a move and was lucky enough to get a shot off and I found an opening to score. My teams were in position, they game me space and that was the most important thing that we got the win.”

On preparing for the World Championships: “It’s a completely different game that we will be playing in Denver. With the shot clock and everything different. It’s certainly something to learn from, a lot of possessions and moving the ball well, certainly with so much talent on the field, anyone can score at any given point, so when to move the ball to the next guy, the next thing you know there is five seconds left on the shot clock. We have to do a better job in the middle of the field. Six-on-six we did a good job but we turned the ball over in the clear. We need to ride harder and clean it up there to give us extra possessions and certainly not lose any, which is what we did today and gave the MLL Team some extra opportunities to score. We just need to clean things up, it was the first week that we’ve been together in awhile, it was great to be with the team and we’re looking forward to getting out to Denver.”

Kevin Buchanan (Boston Cannons)

On coming together as a team: “We spend all week together and we are continuing to get to know on another. Some of the guys I haven’t played with before, so still getting to learn about them on and off the field. I think we had a good four days [of practice], we focused on the international style of play and those rules. Overall we did some things well and we have a lot to work on still, but overall a good showing.

On the competitive atmosphere: “It’s a great atmosphere and a place to play. Yeah it’s not as loose as a normal MLL All-Star Game on both sides, a little bit more serious because there still are cuts to be made and guys are battling for spots, but all in all a good time.”

On preparing for Team Canada: “They have the bull’s-eye on us and we do on them. We are going to run into some quality teams. We need to continue to work on what they are good at and what they excel in, but well be ready for them.”

Team MLL

Head Coach Dave Cottle (Chesapeake Bayhawks)

On his team’s effort: “I thought our guys battled from the beginning to end. Both teams played hard and clean, it was a great event. I was proud of the way our guys fought.”

On the ASG atmosphere: It was a great atmosphere; the crowd was appreciative of any good play. It was a great time and again I was proud of our guys.”

On Team USA: “They have great coaches and players, I think they will do great”

Tom Schreiber (Ohio Machine)

On playing his first ASG: “It was a good time. Coach Coddle said the biggest commodity in the league is the players, and I was able to meet a lot of the guys and the players that I’ve been watching in the last couple of years. Anytime you get to play at this level it’s a good thing, I had a good time.”

On playing Team USA: I think everybody wants to be on Team USA to represent their country, it's the highest level. I think our guys handled it the right way and good sportsmanship.”

On coaching Team Uganda in the World Championships: “Being able to coach those guys, the Ugandans, will be one of the best experiences of my life and I know they are fired up to get out there.”

Joe Walters (Chesapeake Bayhawks)

On the ASG: “This is a great event, the fans are awesome, it was a great crowd here tonight. It’s fun to play against Team USA and we want to wish them the best luck in a few weeks. I know the Coaches have some tough decisions, but it was fun being here tonight and was a great game.”

On the competitiveness of the game: “First off they are playing for spots, their team hasn’t been set yet, so they had something to prove. And our guys are the guys that got cut from the team; they had something to prove too. When you put that together it’s going to make for an intense game. It’s a low scoring game, and I think it showed the quality of the defense and the guys competing.”
