The Ohio Machine were founded in 2011 and joined Major League Lacrosse in 2012 as part of a League-wide expansion. The Machine brought back the name and colors of the previous Chicago Machine team. The team gained their first victory during their inaugural home opener on May 19, 2012. Ohio has been gaining attention in the League over the past four years with back-to-back Semi-Final appearances in 2014 and 2015.
Ohio made some roster moves during the off-season to prepare for what the Machine hope will lead to another post-reason run. In the Supplemental Draft, the Machine added 12 players to their roster, focusing on experienced MLL players to work with younger, newer players and this included roster additions such as Adam Fullerton. Four new defensemen joined the team along with three midfielders, two attackmen, and one goalie. In January 2015, the Machine picked up former Rochester Rattlers attackman Mark Cockerton. In 12 career MLL games, Cockerton has tallied 27 goals, including 24 in his nine rookie year games. During the Collegiate Draft, the Machine made their first selection with the eighth overall pick, and selected Michael Quinn, defenseman and captain at Yale. Ohio selected 10 collegiate players in the draft: two attackmen, four midfielders, three defensemen and one goalie.
In addition to roster moves, the Machine made some changes to their coaching staff. Nat St. Laurent, volunteer assistant during the 2015, was promoted to assistant coach and will serve as the defensive coordinator and oversee all defensive personnel.
Along with these recent trades, the Ohio roster will be secured by many notable players like 2014 Machine Offensive Player of the Year and 2015 MLL All-Star Marcus Holman, 2014 MLL All-Star Steele Stanwick, 2015 MLL All-Stars Peter Baum and Tom Schreiber, and 2015 MLL All-Star and team captain Kyle Harrison.
Training camp for the Machine kicks off this weekend with practices that are free and open to the public. More information regarding the training camp schedule can be found here.
The season will kick off with a road game on Saturday, April 23 against the Florida Launch, and they will continue on the road playing the Denver Outlaws on Sunday May 1. The Machine and Outlaws will head back to Ohio for the Machine’s home opener on Sunday May 8.
