Westervelt Leads Bayhawks to 15-7 Win Over Hounds

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Attackman Drew Westervelt scored all four of his goals in the first half and also added an assist as the Chesapeake Bayhawks (5-1) moved into sole possession of first place in the Major League Lacrosse standings after a 15-7 victory over the Charlotte Hounds (1-5) in front of 8,192 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Bayhawks, who won their third straight game, moved into sole possession of first place in the MLL standings after the Boston Cannons suffered a 13-10 loss against Long Island on Saturday night.

Led by two goals from Westervelt, the Bayhawks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of the first quarter. After a goal by midfielder Brian Carroll cut the Charlotte deficit to 3-1, the Bayhawks scored four straight goals over a four-minute span to extend their advantage to 7-1 with 48 seconds left in the opening stanza.

After the teams traded goals to open the second quarter, attackman Jovan Miller scored off an assist from attackman Matt Danowski to trim the deficit to 8-3 with 8:51 left in the first half. But, the Bayhawks scored three of the final four goals of the first half to take an 11-4 lead into the intermission.

The teams exchanged goals in the third quarter before the Bayhawks opened the fourth quarter with a pair of goals from attackmen Danny Glading and John Grant, Jr. to increase the advantage to 14-5 with 9:47 left in the fourth quarter.

After the teams traded goals, attackman Jeremy Boltus converted an assist by Danowski with 2:46 remaining to narrow the gap to 15-7, but the Hounds were unable to get any closer.

Westervelt, who was named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game, led the Bayhawks with his five-point performance while Grant, Brooks and Matthew Mackrides each added two goals.

Danowski scored a goal with three assists to lead Charlotte in a losing effort while midfielder Stephen Berger added two goals.

The Bayhawks outshot Charlotte by a commanding 56-39 margin and won 19 of 26 face-offs.
