Boston Cannons Week 11 Preview

MLL Week 11 Preview – Boston at Denver

By Meg Andrews

The Boston Cannons head to Denver during week 11 of the 2010 MLL season to take on the Outlaws after both teams clinched spots at Championship Weekend with wins in week ten.

Last Saturday Boston beat the Toronto Nationals 17-10 at Harvard Stadium. Not only did the Cannons secure a spot in playoffs, but Budlight Game MVP Matt Poskay broke the Cannons all-time goal scoring recordwhich is now set at 134.  Poskay currently has 39 goals on the season tying him with Michael Watson and Kevin Leveille for the Cannons single season record.

A win over Denver would clinch the number one overall seed at Championship Weekend for the Cannons. “One of our goals has been accomplished which was to get into the post season. Our second goal is to get that number one seed so hopefully we can do that against Denver. That’s our focus right now,” Boston Cannons Head Coach Bill Daye stated.

Just because they have qualified for the post-season, don’t expect a let down from the Cannons in the final two games of the regular season.   “We have to take the momentum we have and build from that out in Denver and again at home in our last regular season game and build that right into the playoffs,” Poskay stated. “We can’t be complacent. We haven’t done anything yet, all we’ve done is extended our season. We want to be playing our best lacrosse come championship weekend.”

Now that the FIL World Games are over the Cannons will warmly welcome back Paul Rabil, Ryan Boyle, Ryan McClay, and Kyle Sweeney.  Those four played key roles in helping the US National Team defeat the Canadians and win a gold medal in England.  Rabil was named the Tournament MVP and McClay and Sweeney were named to the all-tournament team.  Now they shift their focus to winning an MLL Championship with the Cannons.  “We’re definitely excited to get our boys back from oversees,” Coach Daye said.

The Cannons are ready for a challenging match-up against the Outlaws.  Denver can still claim the number one seed from the Cannons with a win over Boston and then a win in week twelve.

The Outlaws will benefit from the return of five players from the world championships including their top two scorers Drew Westervelt and Brendan Mundorf along with midfielder Max Seibald.  “Denver is a very good team. Offensively they’re right behind us and defensively they have a great goaltender. We have to come out and play good lacrosse and we need to focus on making good decisions,” Coach Daye proclaimed.

The Cannons league the MLL with 145 goals scored thru eleven games while Denver is third with 135 (Chicago is second with 137 goals on the season).  The two teams are also in the top three in goals allowed on the season.

The game can be seen live in New England on Comcast SportsNet New England and Cox Sports Rhode Island as well as on the web on ESPN3.com.  Universal Sports will air the game beginning at 11 PM ET that same night.
