The Boston Cannons (4-2) return home to Harvard Stadium this week after winning their first away-game of the season against the Chicago Machine (3-3) during week six of the Major League Lacrosse season. This Saturday night at 7 p.m. the Cannons hope to defeat the Long Island Lizards (2-4). With a win the Cannons would have a three-game winning streak and a 4-0 record at home for the season.
In their first meeting this season, the Cannons lost a tough battle against the Lizards 13-11 in week 3. At halftime the Cannons trailed 8-4 and were held scoreless in the third quarter. Although they did outscore the Lizards 7-2 during the fourth quarter, their efforts were too little too late. Boston hopes to redeem themselves with a strong defense that outshined Chicago’s last Sunday, and an offense led by three members of the MLL All-Star team, Matt Poskay, Kevin Buchanan, and Chris Eck.
Poskay is having the best season of his MLL career, averaging almost 4 goals a game. His 23 goals and 28 points are both leading the league. Buchanan, who was acquired in a trade during the off-season, has been a strong asset to the Cannons midfield with 11 goals and a total of 17 points. He has teamed nicely with Paul Rabil in the midfield. Rabil was held scoreless by the Lizards in the first meeting but has scored 5 goals in his last two games.
Eck, the Cannons leading face-off specialist, has 91 face-off wins this season, which ranks second in the league. In the week 3 loss he managed to win just 8 of 25 face-offs against the Lizards duo of Greg Gurenlian and Peter Vlahakis, but he has won over 57% of his draws in the last three contests.
Starting goaltender Kip Turner is coming off a 21 save effort against Chicago, for which he was named MLL Defensive Player of the Week. “This league is not easy on goalies,” Poskay stated. “Kip played well [last week], and that energizes the team on the defensive end.” The Cannons will count on Turner to stand between the pipes with the same intensity and energy as last weekend.
Poskay has nearly 10 points on the Lizards leading scorer, fellow All-Star Matt Danowski, who has a total of 19 points. Stephen Berger is Long Island’s top scoring midfielder with 7 goals and 10 points and has appeared in the past three All-Star games. Danowski and Berger will be joined on the 2010 All-Star team by teammates, defensemen Nicky Polanco and Brian Spallina.
The Cannons have made some helpful adjustments since their last meeting with the Lizards and are ready for a re-match. “We’re pretty dangerous,” Poskay confidently exclaimed. “We’re trying to focus on getting better every week. And we’re learning game by game,” The presence of the passionate Cannons fans in the stands is always a confidence booster as well. “The home crowd helps. I don’t think there’s a crowd in the MLL like we have in Boston.”
Coming off wins against Denver and Chicago, the Cannons are confidently ready to face-off against Long Island. “We’re excited to keep this winning streak going.” Poskay said. And Cannons fans are ready to witness it.
The game will be broadcast live on Universal Sports, Comcast Sports Net New England, Cox Sports New Orleans, BrightHouse Sports (Orlando & Tampa), and ESPN3.com.
