In a game defined by odd occurrences including severe thunderstorms and a third quarter lights timer going out, the New York Lizards took complete control. The Lizards (6-4) defeated the Florida Launch (4-6) 20-11.
The Week 10 battle opened with complete domination by the Lizards. All of New York’s early season inconsistencies seemed to have vanished. Rob Pannell, Tommy Palasek and JoJo Marasco each scored two goals for the Lizards, giving the team a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Florida struggled early on the field, with Kevin Cunningham scoring the Launch’s only goal.
The second quarter was a continuation of the first, with spectacular saves by New York goalie Drew Adams and a lack of scoring by the Florida offense. Al Maione, Michael Kimmel, Ned Crotty and Pannell each fired a ball past Launch rookie goalie Niko Amato. Kevin Crowley, Casey Powell, and Cunningham scored for Florida to end the first half down 10-4.
After a lengthy rain delay in New York due to significant thunderstorms, the game resumed.
Perhaps the rain delay revived a lifeless Florida team. Although the Lizards came out strong at the beginning of the half, their defense began to break down. Florida scored four straight goals at the end of the third to gain on the Lizards. Launch goals in the third scored by Stephen Keogh, Garrett Thul, Kieran McArdle, Cunningham and Powell. Scoring for the Lizards were Crotty with one, and Matt Gibson and Palasek each with two.
Just when it looked like Florida might make a late-game comeback in the fourth, the Lizards settled back in, scoring five goals to officially ground the Launch. Goals for New York scored by Marasco, Palasek, Pannell, Kimmel and Gibson. Florida did manage to sneak two more goals by back-up goalie Sean Brady before the end of the game. Goals scored by Powell and Keogh. The Week 10 match-up ended with the Lizards winning 20-11.
Next week, Major League Lacrosse will take a break for the FIL World Lacrosse Championships kicking off July 10 with Team USA taking on Team Canada.
