It was a heartbreaker of a game for the Boston Cannons, who lost by a single point yet again in overtime against the New York Lizards, 16-15. With their fourth consecutive win, the Lizards have now swept the Cannons in their season series. It was a hard fought battle, especially between the players that don the number 1, Will Manny and JoJoMarasco, both with hat tricks. Marasco was awarded Coca-Cola player of the game for his offensive contributions, which also included the game-winning, sudden-victory overtime goal.
Quiet heroes Manny and rookie Rob Emery ensured usual Cannons sharpshooters weren’t missed too much at the FIL World Games, combining for four out of the five goals Boston scored in the first. The pair opened up scoring in the game two and a half minutes in when Emery nabbed a groundball in the midfield and reentered the Lizards’ zone, finding Manny at the top of the two-point goal line.
Although Manny completed his hat trick in the first, the Lizards did not trail without a fight. Tommy Palasek tied the game with his second goal of the match 13 minutes in, forcing Brent Adams to score his first of the night and Manny again all within twenty seconds left in the quarter, allowing Boston to head into the second just barely at 5-4.
The Lizards wasted no time taking the lead again in the second, outscoring the Cannons 10-8 by the end of the first half. 20 seconds in, Palasek completed his hat trick, tying the game at 5-5. He then assisted Michael Kimmel’s first of the night to take the lead, and a 2-pointer from Martin Cahill nullified Ryan Boyle’s first goal of the game for the Cannons. The Lizards and the Cannons both scored another two points apiece, but New York was the only team to climb into the double digits, and the second quarter closed with a score of 10-8 in their favor.
Three consecutive goals allowed Boston to take the lead in the third, but only temporarily. Owen Blye scored two, including a powerplay goal, taking advantage of a Lizards’ slashing penalty halfway through the quarter. New York netted their first of the second half almost six minutes in with a faceoff win by from Jerry Ragonese and a rip from Palasek, his fourth contribution of the evening. The teams ended the third tied 11-11.
The Lizards opened up the final period with back to back goals scored by Marasco. His first was a shot on an open net as Matt Gibson drew goaltender Jordan Burke out of the net with a fake shot and a quick pass to Marasco. Less than a minute later he netted his second, putting New York up 13-11. The Cannons then took the lead with four consecutive goals, Adams completing his hat trick, taking a 15-13 lead, until Kimmel nailed a 2-pointer, tying the score and forcing a sudden-victory overtime.
Marasco sealed the deal for New York on an unassisted powerplay goal 1:47 into overtime, earning the Lizards their 16-15 victory and their fourth consecutive win.
The Lizards look to continue their streak next Sunday as they host the Chesapeake Bayhawks for a matinee game at 3:00 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on CBS Sports Network. The Cannons look to bounce back with a full roster next Saturday, as they travel to take on the Florida Launch for the first of a home-and-home series. Faceoff is at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.com and syndicated channels.
