BALTIMORE, July 7, 2014 —US Lacrosse and Major League Lacrosse have named the Florida Launch as the winner of the league’s monthly sportsmanship award for Weeks 5-8. The Launch, coached by Stan Ross, were selected for the honor based on voting conducted among the league’s game officials.
Florida is the second winner of this new award, introduced in 2014 as part of a joint partnership between Major League Lacrosse and US Lacrosse to promote good sportsmanship in lacrosse. Three monthly sportsmanship winners are being recognized through the 2014 season, with one of those teams then selected by the officials as the MLL’s Sportsmanship Team of the Year Award winner. That announcement will be made during championship weekend in August. The Rochester Rattlers won the inaugural monthly award in May.
"We’re honored to be selected for the award because good sportsmanship is something we do focus on as a team,” said Stan Ross, head coach of the Florida Launch. “We want to set an example for the youth in Florida on how the game should be played and we want to be the ones that kids can look up to. It’s important. We want to be leaders.”
“Congratulations to Coach Ross and the Florida Launch on receiving the Sportsmanship Team of the Month award for June,” said Stephen Berger, men’s game director at US Lacrosse and an active MLL player for the Boston Cannons. “Growing the game has a lot of responsibility tied to it, and as professional lacrosse players and ambassadors for lacrosse, there is an even larger responsibility in being a great role model for younger players. The sportsmanship award is a great way for MLL players, teams, coaches and officials to embody the true meaning of “competing with class” and “honoring the game.”
