RECAP: Chesapeake 12 - New York 11

FINAL STATS

The Chesapeake Bayhawks (4-8) defeated the New York Lizards (7-5), 12-11 in a late come-from-behind win. Chesapeake put a stop to New York’s four-game win streak, and showed that they were not giving up yet.

Hoping to keep up the momentum and continue the winning streak, New York came out strong. The Lizards scored the first two goals, Ned Crotty and Matt Gibson each with one, before Chesapeake could gain possession. A fast break allowed the Bayhawks’ Drew Westervelt to get the team on the board. New York’s Kyle Hartzell would score off of a feed from Lizards’ faceoff man Greg Gurenlian. Other goals in the opening quarter would be scored by Crotty, with his second of the game, and Joe Walters of Chesapeake.

The second quarter was quiet for both teams. Only three goals were scored—Palasek and Pannell for New York, and Matt Mackrides for Chesapeake. Goalies Drew Adams (New York) and Tyler Fiorito (Chesapeake) can be credited for the slow quarter. Both goalies made incredible saves, taking away multiple scoring chances with a total of 17 saves (9 for Adams, 8 for Fiorito). The Lizards would head into halftime up 6-3.

Scoring picked up once again in the third, with New York and Chesapeake scoring five goals apiece. The Bayhawks were determined not to let the Lizards get too far ahead, and got more aggressive on offense. However, every time Chesapeake got within reach, New York would once again pull away.

As frustrations began to build between the two teams, a skirmish broke out early in the fourth quarter, exciting both teams as well as the crowd. Ultimately, Chesapeake would capitalize on the emotion and would score consecutive goals, a two-pointer by Jesse Bernhardt and a goal by Peet Poillon, to take the lead. The Bayhawks, who trailed the entire game, would run out the clock and take the W, breaking New York’s streak with a 12-11 win.

Next week, Chesapeake will host Denver on Thursday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m. (ET). Catch the game on CBS Sports Network. New York travel to Charlotte where they will take on the Hounds at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on Friday, August 1. You can watch the action on CBS Sports Network.
