RECAP: New York 12 - Charlotte 11

FINAL STATS

The New York Lizards (8-5) defeated the Charlotte Hounds (4-9) in a close, down-to-the-wire win. The Lizards outscored the Hounds 12-11, taking the game to the final seconds and finally grabbing the victory.

The opening quarter was completely dominated by the Hounds. After Lizards’ rookie Joe Fletcher scored his first career MLL goal, Charlotte put an end to New York’s first quarter scoring. The Hounds scored four straight goals; John Haus, Mike Sawyer (with two) and Matt Danowski all sending the ball flying past Lizards’ goalie, Drew Adams. Pierce Bassett, who started in goal for Charlotte, had seven saves and an impressive performance between the pipes in the first.

New York’s Rob Pannell and Tommy Palasek would finally start to generate offense for the Lizards, scoring back-to-back goals to start the second quarter. Joe Cummings and Haus would score for the Hounds before the Lizards would go on a scoring spree. New York’s Kyle Hartzell fired a two-pointer, followed by goals from Palasek and Ned Crotty. After a slow start, New York would enter halftime up 7-6 over Charlotte.

Charlotte’s Danowski scored early in the third quarter to tie the game, and started a back-and-forth battle for goals between the two teams. Charlotte’s Jake Tripucka, New York’s JoJo Marasco, Danowski (completing a hat trick) and Palasek all tallied to bring the score to 9-9 heading in to the final quarter.

The fourth quarter began to get physical, with both teams desperate to score. Ten minutes into the final quarter, Pannell netted his second of the game to give the Lizards the go-ahead. Pannell would score again for his own hat trick, followed by fellow teammate Michael Kimmel to give New York a three-goal lead. In the closing moments of the game, Charlotte’s Mason Poli, gave the Lizards a scare as he shot a two-pointer past Adams bringing the hosts within one. With a strong defensive performance in the last few seconds, New York was able to hang on to win 12-11.
