Game Notes: FloridaOhio

Both teams are looking for a win to end the regular season on a high note. Ohio will need to play their best game of the season in order to claim a spot in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Playoffs. While the Florida Launch have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Last Time Out:

Florida: The Launch fought till the final seconds knowing a spot in the 2014 MLL Playoffs was on the line. Unfortunately, they were unable to come out on top, Florida lost to the Boston Cannons 16-15 last Saturday at Harvard Stadium.

Ohio: It was another close game on the road for the Machine, but Ohio was able to defeat the Rochester Rattlers 17-15 at Sahlen’s Stadium last Saturday night and stay alive in the playoff hunt.

Three Storylines:

The Heavy Duty Machine Defense: Dana Wilber, Chad Wiedmaier, Steve Waldeck, Max Schmidt, Brian Farrell, and Greg Bice are the Machine long stick defensemen who hold down the fort. Currently, the Machine are ranked 3rd in the League for best penalty kill. The Launch will have to come out with a bang in order to beat this defense this Saturday night at Selby Stadium.

Breaking Records and Just Getting Started: Florida rookie attackman Kieran McArdle recorded his 31st goal of the season against the Boston Cannons last Saturday, which broke the record for goals by a rookie in a season held by Kevin Huntley since 2008. He was also named Cascade Rookie of the Week for his performance. He is now also tied in the race for points set by a rookie, a record he could break this weekend. Due to McArdle’s remarkable rookie season he is one of the contenders for this year’s Cascade Rookie of the Year Award.

Fan Appreciation Night: What better way to the end the regular season with a night designated solely to the fans? The Machine are giving back to their beloved fans by offering amazing promotions, fun giveaways and fireworks. Also, fans can enjoy $1 hotdogs! Midfielder Kevin Cooper finished the night with 2 goals and 2 assists.

Statistical Leaders:

Florida: Casey Powell continues to lead the team and the League in points with 62. Rookie attackman Kieran McArdle leads in goals (31), followed by Casey Powell (29). Midfielder and faceoff specialist Christopher Mattes leads the Launch in groundballs with 87.

Fun Facts:

·         If the Machine win this Saturday’s matchup against the Florida Launch, it will be Ohio’s first-ever playoff appearance.

·         Ohio has been on a four-game winning streak since July 4, 2014.

·         Even though the Florida Launch are out of playoff contention, they do have all the power to ruin Ohio’s playoff dreams since the Machine need a win-to-get-in.
