Charlotte Hounds at Chesapeake Bayhawks
Saturday, August 9 – 7:00 p.m. (EST) – Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium
The outcome of the Charlotte Hounds Chesapeake Bayhawks game will determine who gets the first overall pick of the 2015 Collegiate Draft in January .
Charlotte: The Hounds suffered a tough one goal loss to New York in week 13. After an impressive first quarter where the Hounds outscored the Lizards four to one, New York took control and notched six to Charlotte’s two. After that, the Hounds were able to tie it up in the third but lost control in the final 15 of the game and fell just shy of giving New York another loss. Matt Danowski led the team with three goals and one assist while Justin Ward attributed three assists as well. Pierce Bassett had an amazing 20 saves for the Hounds. Brendan Fowler was 8-23 on faceoff attempts.
Chesapeake: The Bayhawks had an impressive comeback against Denver but ultimately fell short in the last few minutes of play last week. After a rough first half, the Bayhawks came back to tie the game at 12 going into the fourth quarter. With just over a minute left, the Bayhawks were down by one with the ball but were unable to execute and it resulted in a goal for the Outlaws cementing their win, 18-16. Brendan Mundorf and Drew Westervelt both had four points while Ben Hunt and Joe Walters added three each. Tyler Fiorito had 11 saves in goal and Stephen Robarge was 29 for 36 on faceoff attempts.
Redemption: The Bayhawks last defeated the Hounds in the 2013 MLL Championship Game. Last time they met however, Charlotte was able to pull out all the stops and defeat the Bayhawks by five.
No Post Season: The Bayhawks and the Hounds were both in last year’s title game fighting for the title of 2013 MLL Champions. This year however, both teams were unable to make the cut for post season play. The loser of the game will receive the first round overall draft pick in the 2015 MLL Collegiate Draft.
Offense vs. Defense: The Hounds keeper, Pierce Basset had a record game last week with 20 saves but in the same sense, Chesapeake’s FOGO, Stephen Robarge had a record game winning 29 of the 36 faceoffs giving Chesapeake ample scoring opportunities. Bassett is going to have to be on his A game if Robarge shows up ready to go like he did last week.
Charlotte: Justin Ward has become the quarterback for the Hounds offense. With just nine games under his belt, Ward leads the team with assists (20) and points (32). His speed and strength make him lethal behind the cage where he often works from.
Chesapeake: Drew Westervelt was on fire for the Bayhawks last week when it was important. Westervelt has the strength and ability to shoot from anywhere and he proved that last week when he netted a two-pointer from nearly twenty yards out.
Charlotte: Rookie, Justin Ward leads the team in points (32) and assists (20). Mike Sawyer leads the team in goals with 23 while Matt Danowski and John Haus closely follows with 21 each. Ryan Flanagan has 50 groundballs to lead the Hounds while Tim Fallon has the second spot with 44. Pierce Bassett has a .576 save rate on 92 shots while Adam Ghitelman has a .506 save rate on 239 shots faced.
Chesapeake: Brendan Mundorf leads the team in goals with 20 but is closely trailed by Westervelt with 19. Assists goes to Joe Walters who leads the team with a solid 22. The next closest is Matt Mackrides with 10. Walters also leads in points with 35. Stephen Robarge leads the team in groundballs with 34 and is 107 for 208 on faceoff attempts. Tyler Fiorito has been playing for an injured Kip Turner and has a .503 save rate on 157 shots.
Charlotte fell to Chesapeake in last year’s title game. The teams split regular season with one win and one loss.
Charlotte: The Hounds haven’t won a road game in the 2014 season
Chesapeake: The Bayhawks have won three of the last four MLL Championship Titles (2010, 2012, 2013)
