Ohio Machine at Rochester Rattlers

Game Notes: RochesterOhio

The Rochester Rattlers finished first overall with a dominating win over the Boston Cannons and will face No.4 seed Ohio Machine one more time this season. The game will face off at 3:00 p.m. ET at Wegman’s Stadium in Rochester, as Sahlen’s Stadium was not available due to conflict. The winner will earn a trip to the Atlanta Area for the 2014 MLL Championship Game on Saturday, August 23 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga.

Last Time Out:

Rochester: The Rochester Rattlers dominated the Boston Cannons beating them 18-8 at Harvard Stadium last Saturday night. The Rattlers finished the regular season on top of the Major League Lacrosse Standings earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

Ohio: The Ohio Machine clinched a spot in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Playoffs after defeating the Florida Launch 14-10 on their home turf of Selby Stadium. The Machine ended the 2014 regular season with a five-game winning streak and are more than ready to face the Rochester Rattlers this weekend in Rochester in the first round of the playoffs.

Three Storylines:

A Change in Venue: The Rattlers and the Machine will faceoff Saturday, August 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Wegman’s Stadium in Rochester, as Sahlen’s Stadium was not available due to a conflict. If you’re unable to make it to the game, the action will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

Hungry For Revenge: First, on June 14 the Ohio Machine beat the Rattlers 18-13 at Selby Stadium. Then, on August 2 the Ohio Machine defeated the Rochester Rattlers yet again, 17-15 in a back-and-fourth match at Sahlen’s Stadium, where Ohio handed Rochester their first home loss of the season. The Rattlers are hungry for revenge and hoping that having home field advantage will seal the deal.  

High-scoring Marcus Holman: Ohio’s Marcus Holman finished with the highest number of goals scored this season with 37. Last week against the Florida Launch Holman tallied 4 goals that led to an Ohio victory. Marcus Holman will need to bring his ‘A’ game again if Ohio wants to beat Rochester for the third time this year.

Players to Watch:

Rochester: Miles Thompson led the Rattlers with 5 goals and one assist for six points in total last weekend against the Cannons. His impressive offensive contributions earned him Coca-Cola Player of the Game. Jordan Wolf contributed 2 goals and 3 assists. Dave Lawson tallied 3 goals and 2 assists to finish the night.

Ohio: Marcus Holman led the team with four goals while Steele Stanwick tallied 3 goals and midfielder Peter Baum finished with two goals. Baum also contributed four assists for the Machine. Defensemen Dana Wilber put on an outstanding performance while covering some of Florida’s high scoring attackmen. His defensive contributions earned him Warrior Defensive Player of the Week.

Statistical Leaders:

Rochester: 2014 Warrior Most Improved Player Justin Turri leads the Rattlers in points (34) and assists (13). Attackman Mark Cockerton leads the team in goals with 24, followed by Dave Lawson (23) and Jordan Wolf (21). Defensemen Joel White and faceoff specialist John Ortolani both lead the Rattlers in groundballs with 81.

Ohio: Marcus Holman and Peter Baum both continue to lead the Machine in points with 50. However, Holman now leads the team in goals with 37, while Baum has 35 goals. Attackman Steele Stanwick leads the Machine in assists with 23. Faceoff specialist Bobby Dattilo leads the team in groundballs with 50, followed by faceoff specialist Eric O’Brien with 42.

2014 Season Series:

The Ohio Machine beat the Rochester Rattlers in both 2014 match-ups, 18-13 and 17-15, to sweep the series.
