Warrior recently unveiled a special edition Mother’s Day cleat that will be worn by Warrior Player’s Club members in this week’s MLL games. The cleat is available at a variety of retailers and a percentage of the proceeds will benefit breast cancer awareness via the Mammography Van through the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. It provides screening mammograms and breast health education to predominantly low-income, elderly or non-English speaking women. The special edition Burn 5.0 cleats feature pink and argyle designs and come in both low and mid cuts.
“They’re very flashy,” says Denver Outlaws goaltender Jesse Schwartzman who will wear the cleats in this weekend’s game against the Long Island Lizards. “They go from white and transition to pink on the outside. The inside is plaid and they’re going to look very cool when we’re running.” The opportunity to wear customized cleats for a good cause is meaningful to Schwartzman, who has been personally affected by breast cancer. “My grandmother is actually a breast cancer survivor and I’ll be wearing them in her honor. It’s definitely close to my heart.”
Buggs Combs, who made his return to MLL with the Ohio Machine last week after a ruptured Achilles tendon took him off the map for the 2011 season, says he's proud to wear the cleats for a cause that affects so many people. “As a group, I think every guy has a personal story and everyone has been touched by it in at least some way. Personally, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and she went through radiation and other treatments. To wear these cleats on Mother’s Day is special. Your mother is the person that brought you in to this world. We as players take a lot of pride in helping to raise money for something like this.”
Chesapeake Bayhawks attackman Drew Westervelt will also be wearing the cleats. “I think Warrior’s footwear is getting better and better each year. They’ve done a great job customizing cleats and making it special to be a part of the Player’s Club,” he said. Westervelt, who will wear the cleats during the month of May, says he’s proud to support a great cause using lacrosse as a vehicle. “We’re not just wearing flashy shoes. We’re wearing them for a cause. The lacrosse community is so special in how they embrace charitable issues. I'm really proud to bring awareness to breast cancer by wearing these cleats.”

Charlotte Hounds midfielder Stephen Berger is another MLL player who has been personally touched by breast cancer and is proud to wear the pink cleats this weekend. “I think as a pro athlete, anytime you can promote awareness for a good cause is a pretty special thing.” Berger’s family has been impacted by breast cancer and he says this will make wearing the cleats even more important. “I’m honored to be a part of this. It’s fun and neat and I’ll stick out a little more on the field even though I try not to,” he jokes. “But I’m honored and I showed my mom the cleats and she was stoked about them.”
Other Warrior Player’s Club athletes like Paul Rabil, Matt Danowski and Kyle Hartzell will be wearing the pink cleats this weekend. “I always get my mom something on Mother’s Day and I think this year with Warrior recognizing a great cause is awesome and I’m proud to be a part of it,” Hartzell said. Danowski also noted that he loves the cleat itself and that he’s excited to wear it for a great cause.
The player worn cleats will be signed by the athletes and auctioned on the MLL website. All proceeds will go to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
