BOSTON, Mass. - After missing the Boston Cannons' season-opening win over Rochester last week, attackman Matt Poskay wanted to make up for lost time.
He made sure to do that by scoring five goals, including three in the first half, as the defending MLL champion Cannons (2-0) used a strong effort to post a 20-12 victory over the Charlotte Hounds (0-2) in front of 9,273 fans at Harvard Stadium on Saturday night.
The win allowed the Cannons to win their fifth straight regular season game, dating back to last season. Meanwhile, the Hounds dropped their second straight game.
After the teams traded a pair of goals in the first eight minutes of the game, the Cannons scored four of the next five goals to take a 6-3 lead with 7:14 left in the second quarter. Poskay, who earned Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honors, scored twice during the spurt.
The teams exchanged goals before midfielder Josh Amidon scored with nine seconds left to trim the Hounds' deficit to 7-5 at the intermission.
Attackman Jovan Miller opened the second half scoring with an unassisted goal just 41 seconds into the third quarter, but the Cannons answered by scoring six of the next seven goals to take a commanding 13-7 lead with 6:06 left in the period on a goal by midfielder Paul Rabil.
Following a pair of Charlotte goals, the Cannons added three more goals in the final 2:16 of the third quarter to extend their advantage to 16-9.
Midfielder Stephen Berger scored off a feed from attackman Matt Danowski to trim the deficit to 16-10 with 11:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Cannons responded with three straight goals over a 71-second span for a 19-10 cushion.
Attackmen Jeremy Boltus and Billy Bitter scored back-to-back golas just a minute apart for the Hounds, but midfielder Mike Stone ended any hopes of a Charlotte comeback with an unassisted goal with 1:27 remaining.
While Poskay led Boston with his five-goal performance, attackman Ryan Boyle added a goal with five assists. Meanwhile, Stone posted a three-goal effort for the Cannons, who outshot Charlotte by a 56-49 margin.
Miller and midfielder Justin Smith each scored two goals with an assist for the Hounds while Biller added a pair of goals.
