News and Notes May 20th

Top Scorer: Peet Poillon amassed seven points for Chesapeake in their 16-8 win over Long Island, scoring five goals and dishing out his first two career assists. Poillon only played in two games last season, but in scoring seven goals he showed he can provide an offensive spark.

Faceoff King: Chesapeake's Alex Smith continued his legendary faceoff dominance by winning 17 out of 25 (68 percent) in the game, and set the tone for the Bayhawks' win.

Fresh Face In Net: Drew Adams saved 18 out of 31 shots (.580 save percentage) against Chesapeake in his first career start. Adams only played only 7 minutes in his rookie season last year, and will look to build off of this performance.

Lizards Lethargic: Long Island was dead last in goals scored last year with 125. In fact, the next worse team in the league scored 23 more goals than the Lizards. They opened the season struggling again, only scoring 8 goals against Chesapeake. No player had more than three points in the loss.

Outlaw Stars Shine:  Denver's dynamic duo of Drew Westervelt and Brendan Mundorf combined to score five goals, and Max Seibald scored four (including a two point goal) for the Outlaws. The problem is, the rest of team only scored three total goals in their 16-13 loss at Boston.

Spread the Wealth: Six Chicago players scored two or more goals on their way to a 16-9 win over Toronto. Terry Kimener, who only had 8 goals in 11 games last season, led the way with 3 goals.

Queener Shuts the Door: Toronto typically changes goalies at halftime of their games, with Brett Queener replacing Doc Schneider. The Machine was beating Toronto 9-6 at the half, which turned out to be more than enough of a lead. Queener stopped 10 out of 16 shots (.625 save percentage) in the second half, limiting Toronto to just three goals and the Machine got the win 16-9.

MLL on ESPN2: The season's first live ESPN2 telecast takes place this weekend, with Chesapeake visiting Toronto at 7:30 pm on Saturday. The game, like all MLL regular season games, is also available on ESPN3.com.

Return of Rabil: Reigning MLL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year Paul Rabil missed Boston's opener because of the NLL Championship Game, but will return to action this weekend for the Cannons against Chicago.

Bad Blood Renewed: Long Island takes on Denver this weekend, renewing a rivalry that saw seven unsportsmanlike penalties called, and 21 total penalty minutes in two games last season. Denver won both meetings by a combined score of 28-16.

First Time in History?: Both Chicago and Denver became a part of the MLL in 2006, and both teams have had very different results in their four full seasons. Chicago has never started a season 2-0, and Denver has never started out 0-2. Both have a chance to do just that this weekend. On Saturday, Denver hosts Long Island and Chicago visits Boston

Reese Suspended: Denver Head Coach Brian Reese has been suspended for this weekend's game against Long Island. Reese was ejected late in the fourth quarter for arguing with the referees, and made contact with one of them. The result of his actions was a one game suspension.
