CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Midfielder Ryan Young scored four goals, including the eventual game-winning marker in the fourth quarter, to lead the Long Island Lizards to a 10-9 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Charlotte Hounds at American Legion Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening.
Young, who was named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game, scored with 11:37 left in the fourth quarter to give Long Island a 10-5 lead. But, Charlotte scored four straight goals to trim the deficit to 10-9, but the Hounds were unable to get any closer.
After reigning MLL Offensive Player of the Week Josh Amidon scored to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead early in the first quarter, the Lizards answered with back-to-back goals from Young and midfielder Brian Langtry for a 2-1 advantage with 39 seconds left in the period.
Charlotte tied the game at 2-2 on a power play goal from attackman Jeremy Boltus just over three minutes into the second quarter, but the Lizards answered with a pair of goals from Langtry and midfielder Kevin Unterstein for a 4-2 edge with 9:47 left in the first half.
After the teams traded goals, attackman Matt Danowski trimmed the Hounds' deficit to 5-4 at the intermission when he scored an unassisted goal with 6:07 remaining in the stanza.
Led by two goals from Young, the Lizards outscored the Hounds by a 4-0 margin in the third quarter to extend their lead to 9-4.
Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, midfielder Justin Smith scored an unassisted goal to end the Lizards' run and trim the margin to 9-5 before Young scored his fourth goal of the game off a Matt Gibson assist for a 10-5 cushion, setting up the Hounds' comeback effort.
While Young led Long Island with four goals, Langtry contributed three goals with an assist for the Lizards, who outshot Charlotte by a 42-39 margin.
Danowski led the Hounds with a goal and three assists while Boltus and Smith each scored twice.
