The Big Picture:The Long Island Lizards will host the Denver Outlaws on Saturday, June 23rd at 7 p.m. (ET). The Lizards jumped to 4-2 after a 16-12 win over the Machine last weekend keeping them in 4th place in MLL standings. The Outlaws are also coming off a 16-12 win last week against the Rattlers. Denver improved to 5-2 on the season and moved to 3rd place in MLL standings. In the two teams first meeting on May 12th the Outlaws beat the Lizards 19-11. The Outlaws are hoping to repeat their last meeting, while the Lizards are looking for their 5th straight win this season. The Lizards last loss was to the Outlaws on May 12th.
Denver Outlaws: The Outlaws are coming off a big nationally televised 16-12 win over the Rochester Rattlers last week. Traveling has had no effect on the Outlaws play, they are 2-2 on the road. Outlaws coach Jim Stagnitta is aware of the Lizards recent success saying, “We're facing a Lizards team that is certainly different than the one we faced earlier in the season." He is also excited for a challenge from the Lizards which he feels will help his team saying, “It's great to have competition. It holds guys to a standard of play." The Outlaws hope to bring the Lizards 4 game win streak to a close on Saturday night.
Players to Watch: Goalie Jesse Schwartzman has been playing great in net for the Outlaws, last week he had 16 saves bringing his total to 88 saves this season. Attackman Brendan Mundorf is having an amazing season thus far. He has 17 goals this season after tallying 6 goals last week, he also has 13 assists. Rookie attackmen Mark Matthews has been lending veterans Brendan Mundorf and Jordan McBride a hand on attack, he has proven valuable to this talented team. Always watch midfielder Jeremy Sieverts, he has been a dominate force for the Outlaws with 14 goals so far this season. Another talented player is Josh Sims who has 12 goals this year. The Outlaws defense is headed by veteran Lee Zink (10 ground balls) and Dillon Roy (23 ground balls).
Long Island Lizards: The Lizards are coming off a 16-12 win over the Ohio Machine last week. This was their 4thwin in a row after losing their first two games of the season; their last loss was to the Outlaws. Lizards coach Joe Spallina commented on the team’s ability to come out of half time with a new game plan saying, “We're not waving a magic wand at halftime. We're just looking at our problems and making a tweak here and there." Spallina also commented on Outlaws attackman Brendan Mundorf saying, “He's a special talent. Everyone tries to game plan for him but he just gets it done." Another component to the Lizards success is the addition of multiple attackman, Spallina talked about this in our MLL coaches conference call saying, “Our attack is a group of young guys that have come together quicker than we had anticipated." The Lizards hope to have high productivity out of their young attackmen this week and a great game from their goalie Drew Adams.
Players to Watch: One of the best goalies in the MLL Drew Adams, he has been a dominate force for the Lizards this season with 82 saves so far this season. Watch faceoff specialist Greg Gurenlian, he has been a great asset to the team giving them a great fast break advantages and his ability to put the ball in the net off the break. Attackman Tommy Palasek, the rookie has come out of the gate full speed this season. Palasek has 7 goals so far in his MLL debut season after 3 games. Defensemen Brian Karalunas, is a very talented player who can shut down any attackmen. Look for a great matchup between Karalunas and Outlaws attackman Brendan Mundorf.
