Week 11 Playoff Scenarios

As MLL gears up for Week 11, the fight for playoff spots is becoming more imminent. No teams are currently eliminated from a playoff run and no team has secured a spot, but this weekend will likely change that. Here, MLL breaks down the playoff scenarios for each team in Week 11.

Current MLL Standings (Through Completion of Week 10)

Chesapeake, 8-2 League Leader
Denver, 7-3 Wild Card No. 1
Long Island, 6-4 Wild Card No. 2
Boston, 6-4 Wild Card No. 3
Rochester, 5-5
Hamilton, 3-7
Charlotte, 3-7
Ohio, 2-8

Chesapeake is the current No. 1 seed due to best overall winning percentage. Denver is the current No. 2 seed due to the best overall winning percentage of remaining teams. Long Island is the current No. 3 seed based on the head-to-head tiebreaker, 2-0, over Boston. No teams are currently eliminated.

What Can Happen in Week 11

Boston Cannons

While nothing can be decided this week for the Boston Cannons, each game will be important if the 2011 MLL Champions want to defend their title this year. After a red hot 4-0 start to the season, the Cannons have slid into fourth place in the standings with multiple losses, most recently to the Long Island Lizards. They will face difficult matchups against Denver and the No. 1 seed Bayhawks over the next two weeks before back-to-back games against the Ohio Machine to close out the regular season.

Next Game: The Cannons will host the Denver Outlaws this Thursday, July 19 at Harvard Stadium at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.

Charlotte Hounds

The expansion Charlotte Hounds could face elimination this weekend with a loss and a Long Island win.  A loss would move the Hounds to 3-8 and a Long Island win would move the Lizards to 7-4.  The Hounds would trail Boston by at least three games and Boston owns the tie-breaker (2-0, head-to-head) with three games remaining.  The Hounds would also trail Long Island and Denver by four games with three weeks remaining.

Next Game: The Hounds will travel to face the Rochester Rattlers this Friday, July 20 at Sahlen’s Stadium at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live locally and on ESPN3.

Chesapeake Bayhawks

In Week 11, the No. 1 Bayhawks can clinch a playoff berth with a win or a Rochester loss. A win would move them to 9-2 and they hold the tie-breaker over Rochester (head-to-head goal differential 21-19) with only three weeks remaining.

Next Game: The Bayhawks will travel to face the expansion Ohio Machine at Selby Stadium this Saturday, July 20 at 8 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live locally and on ESPN3.

Denver Outlaws

The No. 2 Denver Outlaws, who will play their remaining four regular season games on the road, cannot clinch a playoff spot this weekend against the Boston Cannons. The Outlaws have played well on the road this season with a 3-1 record (they are 4-2 at home). The team will travel to Boston, Hamilton, Rochester and Chesapeake.

Next Game: The Outlaws will travel to face the Boston Cannons this Thursday, July 19 at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.

Hamilton Nationals

If the Nationals want to make a run to the playoffs they must win this week’s game against the No. 3 seed Long Island Lizards.  A loss will drop them to 3-8 and would move Long Island to 7-4.  The Nationals would trail Boston by at least three games and Boston owns the tie-breaker (2-0, head-to-head) with three games remaining.  The Nationals would also trail Long Island and Denver by four games with three weeks remaining.

Next Game: The Hamilton Nationals will travel to face the Long Island Lizards at Shuart Stadium this Saturday, July 21 at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.

Long Island Lizards

While the Long Island Lizards cannot clinch a playoff spot this weekend, a win would knock the Hamilton Nationals out of the running. The No. 2 seed will play two home games and two road games in the remainder of the regular season; they will have home field advantage against the Nationals and Hounds and will travel to play the Bayhawks and Nationals. This week, the team is coming off a 14-11 win against the Boston Cannons.

Next Game: The Long Island Lizards will host the Hamilton Nationals at Shuart Stadium this Saturday, July 21 at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.

Ohio Machine

This weekend will be critical for the Ohio Machine. They will face playoff elimination with a loss or a Boston win.  A loss will drop the Machine to 2-9 and at least four games back of Long Island and Boston with three weeks remaining.  Even if the Machine wins this week’s game against the No. 1 Bayhawks, the Cannons must lose in order for them to stay in the running (a Boston win would again put Boston four games ahead with three weeks remaining).

Next Game: The Machine will host the No. 1 seed Chesapeake Bayhawks this Saturday at 8 p.m. at Selby Stadium. The game will be televised live locally and on ESPN3.

Rochester Rattlers

Nothing will be decided for the Rochester Rattlers in Week 11. The team will have home field advantage in three of their four remaining regular season games and with a 3-1 record at home this season (2-4 on the road), the Rattlers will push for a playoff spot. The team has won three of their last four games.

Next Game: The Rattlers will host the Charlotte Hounds this Friday, July 20 at Sahlen’s Stadium at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live locally and on ESPN3.

Note: As standings change each week, so do the tie-breakers; scenarios from one week are not necessarily the same the next week.
