This week in the NLL

In week 15 of the National League Lacrosse season, there were teams that clinched berths in the playoffs, those who managed to keep their postseason hopes alive and others whose hopes were stymied for the time being.

The Philadelphia Wings punched their ticket to the playoffs with a 10-9 overtime victory against the Toronto Rock this past Saturday afternoon at home in the Wells Fargo Center. Though the Rock have a bye in week 16, their hopes of being the top seed were put on hold by the Wings, who took the win just over a minute into OT on a diving goal from the Hamilton Nationals’ Jordan Hall.  A return from Brendan Mundorf (Denver), who missed most of the season due to injury, came at a pivotal time for the Wings as Mundorf registered six points on two goals and four assists while Paul Rabil (Boston) had one tally and two helpers. Captain Brodie Merrill (Hamilton) also contributed heavily for Philadelphia, with three assists and a game-high 13 loose balls. For the Rock, captain Colin Doyle (Hamilton) recorded three points on a goal and two assists, but could not lead his team to victory.

It was not only the Wings who secured their spot in the NLL Playoffs this weekend, as the Minnesota Swarm put down the Colorado Mammoth, 17-12 at the Pepsi Center in Denver Saturday night. Jordan MacIntosh (Rochester) made a splash on offense for the Swarm, registering six points on five goals and an assist to help lift Minnesota over the Swarm, partially through taking the crowd out of the game as Minnesota jumped out to a 4-0 lead early. On the other side, John Grant Jr. (Chesapeake) had seven points on two goals and five assists, while MLL stalwart Casey Powell put up eights on four goals and assists each.

Though they did not secure a spot in the postseason, the Rochester Knighthawks significantly improved their chances by holding on for a 15-14 win over the Calgary Roughnecks in the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night. Rochester’s Cody Jamieson (Hamilton) put up nine points in the Knighthawks victory on three goals and six assists, while Joe Walters and Craig Point (Hamilton) contributed as well; Walters had four assists while Point had two points on a goal and assist each. For the Roughnecks, Joe Resetarits (Hamilton) picked up four assists in the loss, which came before a season-high crowd of 12,340.

After a six game losing streak, the Buffalo Bandits desperately needed a win Saturday night to keep any hopes of a playoff berth alive following the Knighthawks’ victory earlier in the night. They found success, and overcame the Washington Stealth, 15-10 at the Comcast Arena in Everett, WA. The victory was hard fought, as Rhys Duch (Hamilton) led the Stealth in points for the night, totaling six on four goals and two assists, while Brett Bucktooth (also of Hamilton) had two assists.

Though Rochester picked up a big win the previous night, their Sunday match-up did not go as well, as the Knighthawks fell to the Edmonton Rush, 14-10 at Rexall Place. With the victory, Edmonton now positions themselves to clinch home-field advantage through the NLL Playoffs with a win over Calgary next weekend, while Rochester’s playoff hopes were put on hold. Jarrett Davis (Hamilton) fares well for the Rush, putting up five points on four tallies and an assist, as did Mark Matthews (New York) who reversed Davis’ output to score once and register four helpers. Zack Greer (New York) was the standout for Edmonton, scoring eight points on four goals and assists each. Jamieson again had a noteworthy performance for the Knighthawks with six points on one goal and five assists but could not lead his team to victory, or the playoffs, as Rochester will need a Minnesota win over Colorado to guarantee themselves a spot in the NLL postseason, or a victory over Buffalo next Saturday to secure their spot as well as a home playoff game.
