Despite both teams registering goal totals in the mid-teens during their week one openers, both the Charlotte Hounds and Rochester Rattlers enter their week two match at 0-1. While neither of the teams came out on the winning end, both found success in their own way and will look for those successes to translate over into their upcoming clash.

Charlotte Game Notes

How they fared last season

1)     July 20, 2012: Charlotte – 5, Rochester – 14 (Five Rattlers scored two goals each)

2)     August 11, 2012: Rochester – 14, Charlotte – 15 (Matt Danowski had three goals and two assists for Charlotte)

Charlotte Hounds

Against the Denver Outlaws last Saturday, April 27, the Hounds gave up 21 goals in a losing effort. Despite their mishaps on defense, Charlotte’s 16-point tally was a far better success than they’d seen last season against the Outlaws, and Coach Mike Cerino believes that’s a positive note to take away from the loss.

·         “We’ve got to make sure we’re executing down the stretch. We also need to be tougher on defense: you can’t give up 21 goals, we’re in a situation where 21 goals no matter what we do offensively isn’t going to get it done,” said Cerrino.

·         Their match-up against Rochester will be the first of two games against the Rattlers in the course of six days. Despite players such as Ryan Flanagan becoming available this week, Charlotte believes they cannot look ahead at whom they do or don’t have, as it will not help them find a way to close.

·         “I am excited about where we are as an organization, and I’m excited about the product on the field. I do feel, and I told the player this, that we’re a better team right now as a team than the one that ended the season last year,” Cerino said of his squad.

Rochester Rattlers

Matched up against the defending MLL Champion Chesapeake Bayhawks, Rochester came up short in their season opener. However, they began to pick up the pace and ended up with 14 points against Chesapeake; a spark which Coach Tim Soudan believes can lead them in the right direction moving forward.

·         “One of our goals before the game was to minimize the number of two-pointers that they got, and ultimately that’s what hurt us,” Soudan said of Chesapeake’s strong point. “We did a good job in the second half stepping way out on their shooters and played more effectively in the second half, so we were happy with that.”

·         The return of Ned Crotty to Rochester will be an added bonus for the Rattlers this week, as he has been chomping at the bit to return.

·          “I think any time [Matt] Danowski’s on the field, you have to pay big attention, and [Peet] Poillon as well; those are two guys we’re going to have to pay close attention to. But they have a lot of athletic threats out there; Jovan Miller, and the things he can do athletically make him very dangerous as well,” said Soudan.
