RECAP: Rattlers bounce back with 9-7 win over Ohio Machine

The Rochester Rattlers grabbed a much needed 9-7 victory over the Ohio Machine on Sunday afternoon, and remain in the fight for fourth place in the standings. The win improved the Rattlers' record to 2-3, while the Machine dropped to 0-5 on the year.

In a defensive battle, Rochester goalie John Galloway led the way with 16 saves, accumulating eight stops in each half. "John played great, and it's a testament to the defense," said head coach Tim Soudan after the game. Rochester pieced together their best defensive outing of the 2013 campaign, allowing only seven goals in the game.

Midfielder Rob Rotanz struck on Rochester's opening possession to give the Rattlers the early lead. Machine attackman Steele Stanwick scored the next, but Rochester's Jordan MacIntosh countered to put the home team up 2-1, at the end of the first quarter. MacIntosh's back-handed goal came off a Kevin Leveille feed.

Rochester scored four more in the second quarter, seeing goals from MacIntosh, Leveille, and Ned Crotty and Mike Leveille. Ohio rookie Logan Schuss scored two of his four goals of the afternoon in the second, after going 0-5 in his MLL debut against the Hamilton Nationals on May 23. The Rattlers headed into halftime up 6-3, capitalizing on all three of their extra man opportunities.

In the third quarter, Schuss fired his third of the night past Galloway to cut Rochester’s lead to two, but Kevin Leveille and MacIntosh each grabbed another goal to put the Machine out of reach. MacIntosh finished the game with a hat-trick and enhanced his 2013 goal total to 10.

Ohio's Brian Phipps saw his first minutes between the pipes for the season, and amassed 15 stops for the visitors. The Machine will look to build on his success, as they next travel to Charlotte to battle the Hounds on Saturday, June 8, at 7 p.m. (ET). This game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Rochester next takes the field in Kennesaw, GA, when the Rattlers take on the Boston Cannons in a destination game on Friday, June 07, at 8:00 p.m. (ET). You can catch this game live on CBS Sports Network.

Notes:

  • Only three Ohio players scored goals; Schuss, Stanwick, and Kiel Matisz.
  • Rochester's John Ranagan made his MLL debut, scooping two ground balls.
  • Six Ohio Machine rookies saw playing time; Schuss, Dominique Alexander, Jake Bernhardt, Chase Carraro, Marcus Holman, and Kevin Mack, with Bernhardt, Carraro and Mack making their MLL debut.
  • Ohio and Rochester split the face-off, each team winning 10.
