The Charlotte Hounds are slated to host the Ohio Machine, Saturday June 8 at 7:00 pm EST at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Charlotte, 2-3 on the season, will be playing for a chance at a .500 record, while the 0-5 Machine is seeking their first win of the season as they head into week six.
Charlotte is fresh off a 14-12 win in New York over the Lizards, while Ohio dropped their fifth game of the season to the Rochester Rattlers with a final of 9-7. Charlotte’s Ryan Young was back at it last week after missing week four, he put up three goals for a hat trick alongside his teammate, Eric Lusby who posted a total of four points.
In week five Ohio managed seven points, two less than their season-high of nine. They are yet to break double digits in scoring. While the Rattlers were the favorite in last week’s matchup, Ohio was expected make more of an impact against Rochester who was resting at 1-3 going into the game. The Rattlers’ defense still proved dominant, however Ohio only kept them to nine points, with the return of Brian Phipps between the pipes.
Phipps is a point of hope for the Ohio Machine, playing all 60 minutes in the last game, his performance will certainly earn him more time in the goal. Ohio will also look to their rookies to improve their scoring efforts, including Logan Schuss and Marcus Holman who each notched 4 goals in the loss to Rochester.
Charlotte has also been leaning on their rookies as well. Week four’s Cascade Rookie of the Week, Mike Sawyer, lead Charlotte’s rally over the Lizards. In two professional games Sawyer has five points, and is sure to pose a threat this weekend, and throughout the season.
The Hounds also have the help of veteran Young, who leads the team in scoring at 16 points. Young’s seven point performance against the Rattlers in week three is a sure sign of things to come from the attackman. Another threat is Matt Danowski, who made his return to the MLL after winning the NCAA Division I Championship as Duke’s assistant coach. His five points against the Lizards is expected to be his standard and Ohio will certainly be weary.
The two sophomore teams struggled for wins in 2012, but Charlotte walked away with victories in both meetups last season. The Hounds went up 18-15 in the first meeting, but Ohio narrowed the lead in the second game, giving up the 17-16 win to Charlotte. The Machine will certainly be looking for their first win against Charlotte but it will not be an easy task as the Hounds aim to start their first winning streak of the season.
Next the Hounds will continue their homestand, hosting the Boston Cannons at 7:00 pm, Saturday June 15. That same night, the Machine will return to Ohio where they will take on the Rochester Rattlers for the second time this season, at 7:30 pm.
