The Second Annual Shootout for Soldiers will take place this Thursday, June 13, at McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md.
Shootout for Soldiers is a 24-hour lacrosse game allowing players of all ages and skill levels to join together in support of wounded soldiers. Participants are placed on one of two teams—the Stars or the Stripes, and will play in hour-long games during the 24-hour period. All proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
Baltimore native Tyler Steinhardt started the hugely successful Shootout for Soldiers event in 2012 when he was just a senior in high school. Tyler also works closely with Fields of Growth, an organization that strives to serve the community and grow the game of lacrosse in both Uganda and Jamaica; he was also named the General Manager of the Uganda Lacrosse Union. Tyler is currently a student at American University in Washington, D.C.
“I was thinking of a way to support our troops, the Wounded Warrior Project and our veterans as well as bring the community together to do the same,” the American University freshman said. “Lacrosse seemed to be a perfect fit and we had a successful event last year. The idea was to connect the veterans with their community and bring them closer together as well as have them enjoy a full day of Lacrosse.”
The game will start at 9 a.m. with a veterans’ game and continue until 9 a.m. the next day. MLL players, including current points leader Paul Rabil and Denver Outlaws standout Brendan Mundorf are going to be on hand to support the event and a MLL hour is scheduled for 7 p.m.
“Paul Rabil and the other MLL players embraced the event last year, going above and beyond what I expected and I am very thankful they are returning this year to support our efforts,” Tyler said.
Last year’s Shootout for Soldiers event made a huge impact in the community and raised over $120,000 for our wounded service members. This year’s event looks to be even bigger and better. Thousands of fans, players and MLL stars will gatherfor a full day of lacrosse accompanied by fun, food, live music, and a silent auction in support of the effort.
