PREVIEW: New York at Rochester

New York Lizards at Rochester Rattlers

Sunday, June 30, 3:00 PM (ET) – Sahlen’s Stadium, Rochester, NY

TV : CBS Sports Network

Notes: Rochester - New York

The New York Lizards continue their four game road trip as they travel to Rochester and take on the Rattlers for their first meet up of the season, Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET, June 30.  The two New York state teams are both trying to battle back after tough week eight losses in a matchup that could belong to anyone.

Both teams, along with the Boston Cannons, rest at 3-5 in the standings and are looking to move one game closer to a .500 record, sneaking out of fifth place.

In their last game, the Lizards dropped one to the Cannons, with a final of 16-12. The struggling offense seemed to have found a rhythm, led by rookie and 2013 All-Star, Rob Pannell, who recorded two goals and three assists. Max Seibald also put on a show with three goals, including a two-pointer, and an assist to become sixth on the list of all-time Lizards’ leading scorers. For the first time all season, Greg Gurenlian was bested in face-offs by the Cannons’ Chris Eck.

The Lizards will need their defense to step up and keep the Rattlers out of their territory, something that has been a consistent problem for them. Their defense, led by 2013 All-Star and 2012 Warrior Goalie of the Year, Drew Adams, alongside long-pole CJ Costabile must put a stop to Rochester’s Ned Crotty and Matt Striebel.

The Rattlers dropped their second straight game at the hands of the Hamilton Nationals in Boca Raton, Fla. this past weekend, but not without the impressive scoring efforts of John Ranagan’s four goals. He has successfully recorded a hat trick in his last three games, and could be the difference-maker for the Rattlers in week nine.

Rochester will need to make something click and step up their scoring efforts. While no one on their roster is a true offensive powerhouse, a well-rounded midfield and attack can keep their sub-.500 team afloat.

The Lizards and Rattlers split their series last year, playing back-to-back games in July. The Lizards took the first game 13-8 on the heels of a great performance by Max Seibald who tallied a hat trick and assist. The Rattlers were victorious in the second game, winning 17-15, led by Steven Boyle who recorded three goals and two assists.

The two teams appear to be fairly evenly matched this season again. Rochester’s John Galloway holds a .553 save percentage in goal, while New York’s Adams is right behind with a .547 save percentage. Offensively their numbers are almost identical.  The Lizards have 82 goals on the season, immediately behind Rochester’s 85. Both teams are also trailing the league in shots on goal, the Rattlers with 201, and the Lizards with 185.  The outcome of this game is absolutely unpredictable with such similar numbers.

This week’s action will be live on CBS Sports Network, beginning at 3pm EDT on Sunday afternoon June 30.

Next, the Lizards will continue on to Denver where they will take on the league best, Outlaws in a July 4th contest at 9pm EDT.  The Rattlers will again host the Hamilton Nationals on July 7 at 3pm EDT. You can catch both games live on CBS Sports Network.
