RECAP: Rattlers hold off Lizards 13-10

The Rochester Rattlers used a six goal second quarter to fuel a 13-10 decision over the New York Lizards on Sunday, at Sahlen's Stadium. With the win, Rochester improves to 4-5 and remains in the hunt for a playoff position.

Matt Striebel rifled in a two-pointer to open scoring, marking his fifth deuce of the season, and claiming the League lead in two-pointers this season. New York then strung together three straight goals, beginning with rookie Rob Pannell's signature question mark dodge and goal, followed by two consecutive Stephen Berger tallies. Rattlers' captain and Player of the Game Kevin Leveille, hit the underhanded equalizer off a feed from Striebel in the extra man opportunity, to end the quarter tied 3-3.

It was all Rochester in the second quarter, as the Rattlers outscored the visitors 6-1. Jordan MacIntosh got the ball rolling on an underhand finish from Striebel in a well executed pick-and-roll. Rookie Dave Lawson followed with Rochester's second man-up goal of the afternoon. New York's Matt Gibson broke up the home team's run with a diving goal to bring the Lizards within one. MacIntosh then responded with a highlight reel quick-stick, back-handed fire past goalie Drew Adams. Defenseman Joel White tallied his first goal of the season off a feed from Leveille, followed by Lawson's second goal. Ned Crotty finished the four-point run off a textbook fast break feed from Leveille, and sent the home team into the locker room with a 9-4 lead.

Each team grabbed two more scores in the third quarter, beginning with New York's Tommy Palasek's near-side goal from teammate Mark Matthews. Defenseman CJ Costabile tallied the other on a diving drive down the middle. Rochester got both tallies from Leveille, finishing on passes from Lawson and Crotty. Leveille finished the afternoon with his first hat-trick of the season.

New York tallied two goals early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to three, but would never get any closer. Berger completed a hat-trick from deep, while Pannell tallied his second of the afternoon. White responded with his second of the day, followed by rookie John Ranagan getting on the board. Pannell rallied for two more  before Rochester wasted the rest of the clock, and secured the 13-10 victory.

Rochester will return to Sahlen's stadium next Sunday, July 7, to host the Hamilton Nationals. Game time is set for 3 p.m. (ET). New York will travel to face the undefeated Denver Outlaws on Thursday, July 4, at 9 p.m. (ET). Both games will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
