Brett Schmidt All-Star

The Charlotte Hounds boast four All-Stars this season as Ryan Young, Brett Schmidt, Ryan Flanagan, and Peet Poillon head to the 2013 MLL All-Star Game Presented by Moe’s Southwest Grill. While Poillon and Flanagan have represented at All-Star Games, this will be the first time for both Schmidt and Young.

It’s easy to look at Young as see why he deserves to be there, resting comfortably within the top ten scorers in the league. However, for Schmidt, a defenseman, it is a bit more difficult, as there are fewer stats to measure defense by, but anyone who watches Schmidt can see his athleticism on the field.

Brett Schmidt is in his third season with the League and with his second team, the Hounds.  A third round draft pick in 2011, Schmidt went to Denver where he recorded 14 groundballs in seven games during his rookie season.

In a trade with Charlotte Schmidt found himself as a part of the brand new Hounds team. Last season he only made five appearances due to a torn pectoral muscle, he still recorded one goal and an assist as well as nine ground balls in that time. Schmidt struggled for the first time in his lacrosse career with an injury but is proving himself now in 2013.  This season Schmidt has made his case clear for the All-Star game, recording 28 ground balls, and playing in all nine games of the season. He has also helped the offense a bit, with a goal and an assist on the season.

In his college career Schmidt joined fellow All-Star and teammate, Ryan Young, as a member of the Maryland lacrosse team. In his time at Maryland, Schmidt recorded 79 forced turnovers, and scooped up 127 ground balls. In his senior year he was named an USILA second team All-American.

Schmidt is a true team player, helping wherever he can, keeping midfielders out of Charlotte territory, scoring a goal here and there, posting an assist or two, and turning over the ball. Schmidt has certainly made himself a case to represent the Hounds at the All-Star Game, and he still has five more games this season to help get his team to the playoffs. If he can remain healthy, this would be Schmidt’s first full season with the league, and thus far a very successful one.

Schmidt is an advisor for BB&T Wealth in Charlotte and lives there as well, making for an easy commute to this year’s All-Star Game as it plays out at the American Legion Memorial Stadium, home of the Charlotte Hounds. This is an opportunity for him to take on some of the best midfielders in the league and prove himself as a dominant defensive player.

The MLL All-Star Game presented by Moe’s will be held on Saturday, July 13. Visit the MajorLeagueLacrosse.com All-Star Game page to purchase your tickets to watch the MLL’s best players go head to head. If you can’t make the game then be sure to tune into ESPN2 for all the action.
