Chesapeake Bayhawks' goalie Kip Turner will make his first ever MLL All-Star Game appearance after an outstanding first half of the 2013 season. Turner is on pace for what could potentially be his best year yet, emerging as an elite goalie in the League, and a true leader amongst a seasoned Bayhawks group. "I've been playing in this League a while now, and finally got my first All-Star game. It is somewhat of a relief, but it is an honor," said Turner.
Turner entered this season with two consecutive MLL Championships, earning one with Boston in 2011, and the other most recently with Chesapeake in 2012. The goaltender has been able to continue that success into this year's campaign, accumulating 120 saves, a .612 save percentage, and a 9.63 goals-against average thus far. Turner has shown MVP-like moments for the Bayhawks, holding New York to only three goals in week 2, as well as a 20-save outing against Charlotte in week 8.
When asked if this was his best season yet, Turner responded, "Some days I do (think so), but it's been a tough season as a team. A few OT losses get you down a little, but as a team we are fighting. For me, I am just happy with the fact that I still get to play."
Since being selected as the second overall draft pick in 2007, Turner has celebrated much success in his seven-year career. He spent five years with the Cannons, including a 2010 campaign that saw the netminder chosen as the Warrior Goalkeeper of the Year. He boasted an impressive 176 saves, as well as a .595 save percentage during the course of that year. In 2012 the University of Virginia product, and Annapolis, M.D. native moved to the Chesapeake Bayhawks, forming a home rather quickly. En route to the Steinfeld Cup, Turner put up some of his best numbers, including 26 saves, a .634 save percentage and a staggering 7.56 goals-against average for Championship Weekend.
Due to his success, Turner is no stranger to MLL's record books. An overall 11.84 goals-against average settles Turner into fourth place in career goals-against for any goalie exceeding 1000 minutes played. His total 719 saves puts him in seventh place in career saves, while his .560 save percentage lands him eighth all-time in save percentage. Turner would like nothing more than to add to his personal record book with a third Championship ring.
Fans can see Turner play in the 2013 All-Star Game presented by Moe's Southwest Grill, on Saturday, July 13, at 7:00 p.m. (ET) at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. Turner said, "I am a huge Moe's fan! Big fan of the queso, and the fact that they yell at you right when you walk in. I like that a lot, it makes me feel welcome."
The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN2. For tickets and more information on the event, visit the MajorLeagueLacrosse.com All-Star Page.
