The Outlaws are hoping to break the best season starting record set by Garry Gait, Mikey Powell, and the 2005 Baltimore Bayhawks, while the Lizards are trying to get back into the playoff race.

Denver became the first MLL team to clinch a playoff spot by defeating the Charlotte Hounds 17-11 on June 29. The push was led by Warrior Defensive Player of the Week Jesse Schwartzman who took over second place in saves per game in Outlaws history with his career-high 27 saves. Offensively, the Outlaws were led by Eric Law and Chris Bocklet recording five points each.

The Lizards dropped their second straight game, 13-10 to the Rochester Rattlers June 30. The Lizards were led by 2013 All-Star rookie Rob Pannell who recorded five points on four goals and one assist. Defensively, the Lizards were led by first-time All-Star Greg Gurenlian who was 13-22 on face-offs and had five ground balls.

The Outlaws were dormant during the trade deadline; however the Lizards were very busy. The July 4 game could see the activation of (A) Steve Mock who was acquired from Boston for (M) Stephen Berger and draft picks. The Lizards also acquired (A) Max Van Bourgondien and (D) Daniel DiMaria for draft picks.

This will be the first of two meetings between the teams this year. Last year, the teams split their two-game series, the first game Denver winning 19-11 on May 12th, 2012. The Outlaws were led by 2013 All-Star Jeremy Sieverts with four goals and two assists while the Lizards were led by Max Seibald who had four goals and one assist.
