Heading into week 11 the Charlotte Hounds are slated to host the New York Lizards in a Saturday afternoon game beginning at 4:00pm ET on July 20 at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and many players will be coming off of two weeks of rest, after the 2013 MLL All-Star, and are ready to get back into action.
This week the Lizards, with a record of 3-7, will be looking for their fourth win of the season, while the Hounds, at 4-6, are seeking their fifth win, just as many wins as they’d earned in 2012.
The last time the two teams met up, on May 31, Charlotte proved to be the dominant team, winning 14-12. The Lizards led throughout the game, 12-9 heading into the third quarter, but then Charlotte held the Lizards scoreless in the fourth quarter, while scoring five goals. In Rob Pannell’s MLL debut he posted three points on a hat trick, and Charlotte’s Peet Poillon and Eric Lusby each contributed four points. While the game was tight through the first three quarters, New York failed to produce in the end and let the win slip away. The Lizards will have to keep this in mind as they take the field on Saturday.
The Lizards are looking to break out of a three game slump, with some tough losses, including week ten’s loss to the Denver Outlaws. Defeated, 16-7, the Lizards took on the best team in the League, and were no match. Again, Pannell continued to produce, putting up three goals and leading the team in points for the season. All-Star goalie, Drew Adams also kept Denver to only 16 goals, under their 17.4 goals per game average.
The Hounds are also coming off a week ten loss to the Boston Cannons. In a game of back-and-forth, the Hounds failed to score all together in the last fifteen minutes, with Boston’s lone fourth quarter goal making the difference in the game. In usual fashion, Danowski led Charlotte in scoring, with four goals and an assist. Poillon and Ryan Young also proved reliable, each posting three points, something that is expected of both players at this point in the season.
Both New York and Charlotte have struggled with consistency when it comes to scoring. The Hounds have failed to score in the second quarter in three of their games this season, and the Lizards could not find their way past Jesse Schwartzman through the entire second quarter in their game against Denver. Both teams have seen the negative impact of only scoring in three of the four quarters, and know they need to keep momentum rolling in the game. For both teams this has been their krypotonite, and they’ll each be looking for ways to take advantage of four, five, and six-goal runs.
New York’s greatest weapon lies in Pannell’s relentless scoring and team mentality, contributing with assists and groundballs. If the Hounds’ All-Star defense, Ryan Flanagan and Brett Schmidt can cover Pannell they’ll certainly handicap an offensively weak New York team. The Hounds however will need to be ready from the “x” as the Lizards’ Greg Gurenlian boasts a league best .613 faceoff win percentage. This game is open to either team, if they can continue to put points on the board and maintain long possessions.
To catch this week’s game tune in to ESPN2, Saturday, July 20 at 4pm ET. Following Saturday, the Hounds will take on the Ohio Machine as they begin wrapping up regular season play on Saturday, July 27. On that same day, the Lizards will head home to host the Rochester Rattlers in a battle between the New York State teams.
