RECAP: Hounds jump into fourth place with 13-10 win over Ohio

BOXSCORE

The Charlotte Hounds continued to make a push for the playoffs on Saturday night as they recorded a 13-10 win over the Ohio Machine.  Led by Player of the Game, Peet Poillon, the Hounds capitalized on long possessions and a strong midfield.

The game opened with a single goal from Ohio’s Kiel Matisz, putting Ohio up 1-0 through much of the first quarter. While the Hounds’ defense managed to keep the Machine to just a goal through eight minutes, Ohio held long possessions, keeping the ball away from Charlotte. Showing some rookie action, Ohio’s Marcus Holman added an insurance goal, making it 2-0 off a feed from Logan Schuss.  It wasn’t until the 14:31 mark in the game that Ryan Young grabbed Charlotte’s first goal of the game, and their only one of the quarter.

The complexion of the game quickly changed in the next fifteen minutes, which belonged to Charlotte. The quarter opened with Mike Sawyer’s first goal of the game, followed by a tag-team of Poillon to Eric Lusby. Another pair from John Hausand Poillon made it 5-2, Charlotte. To finish off a five goal run, Matt Danowski went low off a feed from Sawyer, putting a two pointer past Brian Phipps. Ohio’s Joe Cummings grabbed their lone point of the quarter, before the Hounds’ Sawyer and Haus posted another couple points, to enter halftime up 9-3.

Heading into the last half of the game, Ohio opened it up with back-to-back goals in just two minutes, as Matisz and Chazz Woodson each tallied a point. Charlotte answered with a goal from rookie, Mason Poli, who bounced one in and received the point only after a review of the play. Danowski then sent one to the back of the net extending Charlotte’s lead 11-5. Ohio made another bid for the lead when Jeff Ledwick and Schuss added two goals, making it 11-7, the Machine still trailing. With less than 90 seconds left on the clock, Kyle Hartzell fired one past Adam Ghitelman, to bring Ohio within just three points of the Hounds.

The fourth quarter began with plenty of action, but it was over three minutes in before either team scored. Charlotte took advantage of a man-up situation, as Poillon fed to Lusby again, going up 12-8. Poillon added one more point to the total, before Logan Schuss slashed back-to-back goals to complete a hat trick and allow Ohio to close in on Charlotte, 13-10. That would be all though, as Charlotte managed to run down the clock and keep the Machine out of the goal in the final minutes of the game.

With this win the Hounds are now 6-6 on the season, and looking to next week to finally move over .500 for the first time this season. The Machine drop to 1-11 after their final home game of the season.

Next week the Hounds will play their last game in Charlotte, as they host the Hamilton Nationals at 7:00pm ET, live on ESPN3.  The Machine will travel up to Boston to take on the Cannons, who remain in playoff contention. The Ohio-Boston game will be featured as the YouTube game of the week live at 4pm ET.

·         Ohio’s Kyle Hartzell and Charlotte’s Mason Poli are tied, leading the League’s defensemen in goals, each with six.

·         Rookie, Logan Schuss, leads Ohio in goals, with 23 on the season, after scoring three against the Hounds.

·         Both Adam Ghitelman and Brian Phipps made 13 saves on the night, with Phipps battling off 24 shots on goal, and Ghitelman with one less, at 23 shots on goal.
