Denver Outlaws rookie attackman Eric Law entered MLL as a relative unknown to most lacrosse fans, but his incredible offensive skills have made him a household name in a matter of weeks. Just eight games into his professional career, Law has managed to put himself into contention for Major League Lacrosse’s Cascade Rookie of the Year Award.
In his collegiate career Law was extremely productive, but never seemed to be in the national spotlight for his accomplishments. A transfer from DIII Salisbury, Law was the anchor for the University of Denver’s 2012-13 Final Four team. The Denver native was able to catch the attention of lacrosse fans with his magnificent performance in the last NCAA tournament. After being eliminated from the national championship hunt, Law, who was drafted 29th overall, joined the Outlaws and Major League Lacrosse, a decision that would show the world exactly how talented of a player he truly is.
When Law stepped onto the field for his first MLL game nobody, not even he, could have anticipated the show he would put on for fans during the following two weeks. During his first pair of appearances the rookie went nine-for-nine shooting, a performance that won him Cascade Rookie of the Week honors. Despite being inserted into a lineup with some of the best shooters in the game, Law made his presence felt on the Outlaws’ roster immediately, earning a starting spot on the number one attack line immediately.
On a team where touches are hard to come by, Law has been able to make the most of his shooting chances more often than not. Through his first eight games as a professional, Law has been able to rack up 27 points, 20 of which are goals. His shooting percentage has been well above average; Law is currently scoring on almost 59 percent of his shots.
While some rookies that were highlighted in this feature aren’t contributing to team successes, Law has become an important part of the Outlaw’s unbeaten season. With much of opposing defensive attention dedicated to Brendan Mundorf and Chris Bocklet, Law has been able to sneak in relatively unnoticed and put up some impressive numbers. It could have been easy for Law to get lost in the shuffle of this very deep and talented roster, but he has shone through becoming a valuable offensive weapon.
Expect to see Law’s talents on display Championship Weekend, presented by Smartlink as his Denver team seeks its first MLL title. The rookie has made his presence felt during the regular season, now it’s time to see what he can do in the playoffs.
