DRAFT WATCH: Attack

The 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft is only one week, on Friday, January 10, at the US Lacrosse Convention. We continue to profile some of the best prospects eligible for the draft.  Here are five attackmen who have excelled in their collegiate career so far.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars to watch the Collegiate Draft live on the MLL’s Youtube channel starting at 8 p.m. on January 10.

This past year on the NCAA Division 1 Lacrosse scene, there were many standout attackers who put up impressive numbers and performances that caught the attention of many. At a time where the MLL is always in need of up and coming attackers to bring their talent to the league, there are a handful of seniors finishing up their college careers this year that have potential to make nice additions to next year’s teams.

Miles Thompson- University of Albany - 29 goals, 12 assists- 41 total points

This standout attacker for Albany has racked up an impressive list of statistics in his past 3 years in college. After starting all 15 games on attack as a freshman, making the America East All-Rookie Team, and being crowned America East Rookie of the Year, he returned his sophomore as the only player to start all 16 games and was the team’s leading scorer. As a junior he was an All-American Honorable Mention, America East All-Conference first team, scored in all 12 games played, and broke school records such as points in a game with 14 against Stony Brook, assists in a game with 9 against Stony Brook, and goals in a game with nine against Bryant. This talented attacker has potential to make a statement in the MLL with his clear knowledge and natural talent on the attacking end.

Jordan Wolf- Duke University -  31 goals, 20 assists- 51 total points

As a freshman, was a USILA All-America honorable mention, was ranked second on the team in scoring with 31 goals and 20 assists for 51 points, and had at least one point in 15 contests and had 12 multiple-point outings. As a sophomore led the Blue Devils with 65 points from 32 goals and 33 assists, was a USILA All-America second team, became the first Blue Devil to earn All-ACC honors in his first two consecutive seasons, and was ranked third in the ACC in points and assists. This small, quick attacker absolutely blows by defenders and has an uncanny ability on the crease.

Kieran McArdle- St. John’s University - 36 goals, 49 assists- 85 total points

As a sophomore, this attacker was one of the first Red Storm players to earn first team All-Big East recognition. He became the first St. John's All-American since 1986 by earning USILA All-American honors, and he led the team with 28 goals and 32 assists. As a junior he was named a Tewaaraton National Player of the Year nominee and was named a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) second team All-American. With his solid and consistent play, McArdle has a shot to make a reliable addition into the MLL.

Mark Cockerton- University of Virginia - 49 goals, 7 assists- 56 total points

Currently playing on Canada’s preliminary roster, this international player has made a name for himself at UVA in his 3 years there so far. He was named a USILA Third-Team All-American, he scored at least one goal in all 14 games he appeared in, Scored 49 goals which ranks as the fourth-most in a season all-time at UVA, and his 3.5 goals per game average led the nation in 2013, and is the second-best rate for a season among UVA's Top 10 goal scorers for a season, trailing only Doug Knight's 1996 mark of 3.73 goals per game.

Justin Ward- Loyola - 27 goals, 35 assists- 62 total points

This Loyola attacker has proven to be quite the leader thus far in his collegiate career. As a sophomore, after a relatively quiet freshman year, he emerged as one of the best distributing attackers in the game during the season, leading Loyola with 31 assists. As a junior, he finished 11thin NCAA Division I in assists per game (2.19) and 19thin points per game (3.88), and he earned All-ECAC Second Team and USILA All-America Honorable Mention honors.
