The second week in the NLL held two games in which the Toronto Rock defeated the Calgary Roughnecks, and the Colorado Mammoth defeated the Vancouver Stealth.
Toronto solidified their win over the Calgary 16-11 at the Air Canada Centre Friday night, January 3, to kick off the season with a win at home. The win for the Rock is their second season-opening victory over the Roughnecks in two consecutive years.
The Rock maintained the lead over the Roughnecks for the entirety of the game. Toronto took the lead with three goals in two minutes in the first and never relinquished control, despite a well fought effort from Calgary, especially in the final quarter. Charlotte Hounds Faceoff man Geoff Snider (1G, 0A), won 64.3% of his draws and contributed one goal in the Roughnecks’ loss.
The Mammoth defeated the Stealth by a single goal in a riveting battle at the Pepsi Center Saturday night, January 4. Unlike the game the day before, an even effort by both teams made for a tight outcome. Colorado took charge in the first half of the game, outscoring Vancouver 6-4; however, they were unable to hold the lead, ultimately losing to the Stealth, who dominated the second half with a final score of 13-12.
Former MLL teammates Drew Westervelt (4G, 2A) of the Chesapeake Bayhawks and John Grant Jr. (4G, 5A), now of the Denver Outlaws, contributed to Colorado’s win, notching a total of four goals. Westervelt was the first to score in the game with a pair of goals momentarily giving the Mammoth a 2-0 lead early in the first. He also scored later in the fourth, totaling three goals and two assists in the game. Grant Jr. netted his own in the third, and helped out with four assists, totaling five points in the game.
