Teams begin training camp this weekend


After eight long, cold months (in most MLL climates), 2014 Faceoff Weekend is just three weeks away. If you can’t wait until then you’re in luck, because teams will open their training camps this weekend in anticipation for the 14th MLL season. The New York Lizards will be the first to open when they do so tomorrow on Long Island.

After all eight squads open up, the teams will begin to scrimmage starting on Saturday, April 12. Then, after the preseason games are out of the way, the season will take off in both Florida and Charlotte on Saturday, April 26. Look out, lacrosse fans: the MLL season is closer than you think.

Below is a list of when teams report to camp, where they will report and when they will scrimmage. Note: Any times for practices and/or scrimmages shown below are approximate and subject to change.

 

Boston Cannons report…

When: Saturday, April 5

Where: Harvard Stadium, Allston, Mass.

The Cannons start things off with conditioning testing and a practice on Saturday, April 5. After a practice Sunday morning, the team will travel to Schenectady, N.Y. for a practice at Frank Bailey Field on the campus of Union College on Saturday, April 12, before taking on the Rochester Rattlers later that night in a scrimmage. Boston will practice again at Union on Sunday before traveling back home for a practice at Harvard on Saturday, April 19. The Cannons open the year hosting the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Sunday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m.

 

Charlotte Hounds report…

When: Saturday, April 12

Where: Providence Day School, Charlotte, N.C.

The team will hold their first two practices – one in the morning and one in the afternoon – on Saturday, April 12 at the Providence Day School in Charlotte. After another practice at the same location on Sunday, the Hounds will practice down in Baltimore on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19. Later on in the day on the 19th, Charlotte will scrimmage against the Chesapeake Bayhawks, Denver Outlaws and Florida Launch.The Hounds take the field for real on Saturday, April 26 when they host the Ohio Machine.

 

Chesapeake Bayhawks report…

When: Saturday, April 5

Where: Saint Mary’s High School, Annapolis, Md.

The back-to-back champs will hit the field early and often, as they practice twice at Saint Mary’s High School on April 5. The team will practice again at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in nearby Olney on Sunday. It’s more of the same the week after, as the Bayhawks hold two practices on Saturday, April 12 at Saint Mary’s before going to Allen Park Pond in Bowie for Sunday’s practice. After plenty of prep work, Chesapeake will play two preseason games in Annapolis – one against Denver and once against Florida – before finally opening their season in Boston on Saturday, April 27.

 

Denver Outlaws report…

When: Saturday, April 12

Where: Sports Authority Stadium, Denver, Colo.

Denver will get right at it, as they hold four practices over the first two days of camp. The Outlaws will practice at both Sports Authority Stadium in Denver and Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce on April 12, before heading to the University of Denver for a morning and afternoon practice on the 13th. The team will then travel to The Severn School in Severna Park, Md. on Saturday, April 19 for a practice before their two scrimmages later in the day. The Outlaws open the season on Saturday, April 26 in Florida at 7:00 p.m.

 

Florida Launch report…

When: Saturday, April 19

Where: Annapolis, Md.

The Launch get right into the swing of things in their inaugural season, as they will take on the Chesapeake Bayhawks and the Charlotte Hounds in a pair of scrimmages down in Annapolis on April 19. Florida begins their season on Saturday, April 26 when they host the Denver Outlaws at 7:00 p.m. The game is available on YouTube, as are six other Launch games this season.

 

New York Lizards report…

When: Friday, April 4

Where: Adelphi University, Garden City, N.Y.

The Lizards will hold eight practices and a scrimmage over the three weeks of camp, starting tomorrow at Adelphi. The team then will practice twice on Saturday, once at Centerreach High School and once at Smithtown West. New York will then hold practice at Division Avenue High School in Levittown on Saturday, April 12 before heading back to Adelphi on Sunday for a practice in the morning and a scrimmage against Isarel’s National Team in the afternoon. The team wraps up their preseason with practices at Stony Brook University on Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th and another at Rocky Point High School on Saturday. The Lizards open their season at home on April 27 against the Rochester Rattlers.

 

Ohio Machine report…

When: Saturday, April 5

Where: Resolute Athletic Complex, Columbus, Ohio

The Machine will practice the first two weekends and take the final week of the preseason off. Ohio opens camp at the Resolute Athletic Complex in Columbus on April 5, then will hop over to St. Charles Preparatory School for two practices on Sunday. The team will hold another practice at St. Charles on Saturday, April 12 before scrimmaging there later in the day. The Machine will practice twice more on Sunday, then prepare for their Faceoff Weekend matchup with the Hounds in Charlotte.

 

Rochester Rattlers report…

When: Saturday, April 5

Where: University of Albany, Albany, N.Y.

The new-look Rattlers will practice once on Saturday and once on Sunday at the University of Albany. They’ll hit the Albany field once more on Saturday, April 12 before heading to Schenectady to take on the Cannons in a scrimmage later that night. They finish up camp on Sunday, April 13 when they hold one final practice at Albany, leading up to their first game of the regular season against the New York Lizards.
