Chesapeake Bayhawks at Charlotte Hounds
Saturday, May 10 – 3:30 p.m. (EST) – American Legion Memorial Stadium
WATCH: CBS Sports Network
The Charlotte Hounds (0-2) are looking for not only their first win of the season but also redemption from last year’s title game against the Chesapeake Bayhawks (1-1).
Last time out:
Charlotte: The Hounds suffered another tough loss last week falling to Florida Launch 11-8. The two teams traded goals throughout the game and were tied going into the fourth. A strong run from Florida left Charlotte scoreless until the last two minutes of the game. Pierce Bassett stepped up for the Hounds making 11 saves in cage. Matt Danowski led the attack with three goals while Matt White had a goal and an assist. Tim Fallon was 15 for 23 on faceoffs.
Chesapeake: The Bayhawks got redemption last week in a stunning 12-11 overtime victory against the New York Lizards after losing in week one to Boston. While Matt Mackrides led the offense with three goals and one assist, Stephen Peyser scored the game winning goal in overtime giving Chesapeake their first win of the season. Kip Turner had a solid 20 saves in goal.
Rematch:The Hounds and the Bayhawks last faced each other in the title game. Charlotte is looking to redeem themselves after losing by one against the two-time defending champions.
Missing: Part of Charlotte’s success last season is attributed to the efforts of Geoff Snider and Adam Ghitelman, both of whom have yet to play this season. Snider won 15 of the 20 faceoffs last time the two teams met. Ghitelman made key saves to keep the Hounds in the game and morale high. The Hounds have had a tough start losing to both Ohio and Florida in the first two weeks of play without the two starters.
Goalie Game: Both teams have a goals against average of 13. A big factor in the outcome of this game is going to be the goalkeepers and their performance. Turner is always a reliable wall while Bassett is still a bit of an unknown variable. Bassett has had a strong start for the Hounds with 23 saves and only 20 goals against. The Bayhawks are going to have to experiment with their shots while the Hounds are going to have to keep Turner moving to find an opening.
Players to Watch:
Charlotte: Matt White has been an important factor on the Hounds offense so far with three goals and one assist. He has the best shot percentage on the team. His ability to create scoring opportunities isn’t obvious in his assists but rather in his movement on the field.
Chesapeake: Matt Abbott may not have the stats to back him up but the midfielder was key in the overtime win last week against the Lizards as he outran three new York players to clear the ball up field. It’s hard to stop him because of his speed and composure making him one of the best transition players in the League.
Charlotte: Matt White, Ryan Young, and Matt Danowski are all tied at four points. Ryan Flanagan leads the team with nine ground balls while Pierce Bassett has a .535 save percentage on 43 shots. Danowski has 18 shots with 14 on cage.
Chesapeake: Kip Turner has a .632 save percentage with 24 saves and 14 goals against. Brendan Mundorf has easily adjusted to playing with his new team and leads the team with eight points (5 goals, 3 assists). Matt Abbott, Dan Burns, and Brian Megill make up almost half of the teams ground balls with seven each. Matt Mackrides has had twenty shots.
2013 Season Series:
Charlotte fell to Chesapeake in last year’s title game. The teams split regular season with one win and one loss.
Charlotte: The last time the Hounds started the season 0-2 was in their inaugural season in 2012.
Chesapeake: The Bayhawks hadn’t lost an overtime game until last year when they lost three of their four overtime games.
