Game Notes: Ohio - Florida

Ohio goes on the road yet again in Week 3, this time to Boca Raton to face the Florida Launch. Each team will be looking for their second win of the 2014 season.

Last Time Out:

Ohio:Despite losing last week, the Machine impressed many, battling back from an early 4-0 deficit to lead the Denver Outlaws for much of the second half. Ohio ultimately lost 14-12, but their dominant third quarter play showed that this team is much improved over last year’s 2-12 squad.

Florida:The Launch nabbed their first franchise victory last week against the Charlotte Hounds. After a tough season-opening loss, Florida showed up ready to fight in Week 2, battling the Hounds in a close match but ultimately winning 11-8.

Three Storylines:

New Faces?: The collegiate careers of both Tom Schreiber and Kieran McArdle have come to close, and both teams have added them to their respective rosters. Schreiber was selected No. 1 overall by Ohio, and McArdle was chosen 5th overall by the Launch. If either player is in uniform this weekend, he could have a huge impact on his new team.

Losing Ground: Florida is last in the league in ground balls, picking up only 39 this season. However, Ohio isn’t substantially better in this area. They have 52 on the year, good enough for 5th in the league. Look to see which team will step up and take possession of the loose balls.

Protecting the Goal:Scott Rodgers has been extremely strong for the Machine this year, leading all goalies in the league with 35 saves. On the other end, Launch goalie Brett Queener returned to the goal last week after missing the second half of Week 1, and he was equally as impressive, allowing only 8 goals on the Hounds’ 26 shots.

Players to Watch:

Ohio: Marcus Holman had a huge game last week, with three goals and two assists. He seems poised to have a massive sophomore season, as he already has nine points on the season, compared to 20 in his ten games of 2013. If he can continue his streak of multi-goal games, he could be difficult for the Launch defensemen to stop.

Florida: Last week’s Warrior Offensive Player of the Week Garrett Thul was crucial to his team’s win last week, scoring three goals at critical points in the game. In addition, Casey Powell had another big game, with 2 goals and 3 assists. The Launch will need another big performance from these two in order to knock off the Machine.

Statistical Leaders:

Ohio: Holman and Kyle Harrison lead the Machine with 5 goals each, while Holman and Steele Stanwick are tied for the team lead in assists (4). Dana Wilber leads the team in ground balls, with 10 on the year.

Florida: Veteran attacker Casey Powell is the team leader in points (11), goals (5), and assists (6).Christopher Mattes leads the team with 8 ground balls, and Brett Queener has 27 stops in the goal this year.

2013 Season Series:

This is the first meeting between the two teams.

Fun Facts:

This will be the third consecutive road game for the Machine. They will return to Ohio for their home opener next weekend against the Lizards.

Casey Powell is only six points away from tying the MLL all time record for career points.
