This week in the NLL

This weekend, the National Lacrosse League hosted its first of a two-game Division Final series between the Rochester Knighthawks and the Buffalo Bandits in the east, and the Edmonton Rush and the Calgary Roughnecks in the West.

The Bandits stole the first win of the Eastern Division Finals from the Knighthawks 12-8. Despite strong offensive efforts from Florida Launch teammates Cody Jamieson, who netted two goals and helped out with three assists, and Stephen Keogh, with a goal and an assist of his own, Rochester was unable to push through Buffalo’s layered defensive coverage. Their only hope now is to secure a win in Game Two next Saturday, and then take the deciding 10-minute tiebreaker game that would immediately follow a series split.

The Calgary Roughnecks were able to secure another win in overtime in Game One of the Division Finals, beating the Edmonton Rush 12-11. The Rush controlled most of the game with Rochester Rattlers’ Mark Matthews leading the offensive barrage. Matthews, named the runner leader, earned third star of the game for contributing seven points (three goals, four assists). His efforts were supported by Major League Lacrosse teammates Zack Greer of the Denver Outlaws, who scored two of his own goals and one helper, and Florida Launch midfielder Jeremy Thompson, who took 19 out of 27 faceoffs. Unfortunately, the Rush must battle back and take Game Two and the tiebreaker against the Roughnecks next Friday if they are to advance to the Championship Finals.
