Power Rankings Week 3

During the 2014 MLL season, Major League Lacrosse will be using a power ranking system to show fans how their favorite team stacks up against the competition. A teams' power ranking is based on voting conducted by MajorLeagueLacrosse.com's contributing writers. After raw scores from the writers are combined, teams will then be rated on a scale of 1-100. That final number will represent a team's power ranking for that week.

Denver Outlaws

The Outlaws hold onto the top spot once again after defeating the Cannons in overtime at Harvard Stadium. This team can win anywhere, any way and at any time. Winning in the regular season has never been a problem for the Outlaws -- it's whether or not this team can continue to play well in August when it counts.

Even though the team is the newest in the league, with veterans like Casey Powell and Brett Queener leading the team, it’s going to be hard for them to not be successful. However, with a new team and new rookies coming in, Florida is going to have to work through the kinks that come with being the new kid on the block.

Ohio Machine

Is this the same team from the previous two seasons? Not at all. Ohio has come out big this year with great games and while they fell to Florida last week by one, they came back from a four goal trail to score six unanswered. With the addition of rookie, Tom Schreiber the team is going to do nothing but improve as the season goes on.

Rochester Ratlers

The Rattlers were all about team defense before the season started and yet they've put up 15 goals twice already this season. This team is much, much better than once predicted and could certainly push for a playoff spot with their strong lineup from top to bottom.

Boston Cannons

The Cannons very nearly knocked off the mighty Outlaws last week, which would have rocketed them up our leaderboard. Despite the loss, the Cannons impressed many, scoring two goals in the final minutes to force overtime. They also scored the first 1st quarter goal allowed by Denver all season. Both of Boston’s losses have been by one goal, but they’ll need to start winning those tight games if they want to make it into the postseason.

The Lizards have been struggling with putting the pieces together so far this season. With talent like Max Seibald and Matt Striebel leading the offense, Greg Gurenlian at faceoff, and Kyle Hartzell and Drew Adams holding down the D, you’d think the Lizards would be unstoppable but the team has yet to get into the swing of things. Facing Ohio this weekend they need to come up with a big win if they want to recover their loss against Rochester last week.

Charlotte Hounds

The Hounds finally got their first victory of the season last week, although a victory over Chesapeake is less impressive when you consider the disappointing play in 2014 of the defending MLL champions.  The Hounds are tied for fewest goals in the league right now, so they’ll need to drastically improve their offensive output if they want to make it back to the playoffs this season. Last week’s game was a good start, but the Hounds still have room for a great deal of improvement.

Chesapeake Bayhawks

Everyone is still waiting to see the two-time defending Steinfeld Trophy team come to life. With their overtime win two weeks ago, it looked as though the spark had ignited but with a five goal loss to Charlotte this weekend, it seems as though the spark has already fizzled out. Still awaiting the return of Joe Walters (indoor commitment), the Bayhawks need to pull out a big win this weekend against the Florida Launch to get back on track.
