The Denver Outlaws (4-0) secured their 24th consecutive regular season win Saturday night against the Rochester Rattlers (2-2) 14-8 on their home turf. A hat trick from Drew Snider and a goal and five assists from Coca-Cola Player of the Game, John Grant, Jr. helped the Outlaws earn the victory.
Despite opening up scoring in the first two quarters, the Rattlers were quick to fall in both offensive zeal and defensive coverage to a dominating Outlaws team. Denver was able to execute good ball movement and share attacking endeavors with all six goals prior to halftime from six different players. Both Eric Law and Grant were able to net their first goals of the night, as well as two assists a piece in the first half.
The Outlaws midfield had been highlighted as a place of improvement prior to the game, but Jeremy Sieverts, Snider, and Justin Pennington were able to offensively contribute, Sieverts and Pennington scoring two goals each and Snider earning a hat trick. Anthony Kelly was also able to claim six out of ten faceoffs in the first half, and 10 out of 22 on the whole, with Pennington winning two out of the three he faced as well.
Pennington’s second goal of the night was much needed in order to squelch any chance of a Rattlers comeback in the second half. In an effort to catch up to the Outlaws, Rochester had netted four back-to-back goals but Pennington’s two-pointer doused the Rattlers’ spirits.
Rochester fell mostly due to their attackmen’s inability to produce quality shots on net. Although they outshot Denver 38-37 on the whole, the attack was unable to penetrate Denver’s stifling defense and create enough space in front of the goal for a potential back-netter. Jordan MacIntosh, Kyle Denoff, Justin Turri, and Sam Bradman were four out of the six scorers from the midfield that had to take matters into their own hands.
To manage the offensive barrage, net-minder John Galloway made 13 saves, but the Rattlers were still unable to come from behind and knock the Outlaws off of their streak.
Both teams are off next week, but the Outlaws return first on Friday, May 30, as they host the Charlotte Hounds (1-3) at 9:30 p.m. (ET), viewable on CBS Sports Network. The Rattlers will play their next game on Sunday, June 1, to the visiting Florida Launch (3-1) at 1:00 p.m. ET, available to watch on ESPN3 and syndicated channels.
· The Rattlers went over 21 minutes between the second and third quarter without finding the back of the net.
· Denver’s first seven goals were scored by seven different players.
· The matchup only had one hat trick (Drew Snider) but featured six players with two goals each. Rochester’s Steven Boyle and Bradman each had two, and Denver’s Pennington, Law, Cam Flint, and Sieverts also had deuces.
