After a week off to enjoy some outstanding NCAA Lacrosse action, the MLL is back in session this weekend with a full slate of excellent matchups.
6: The number of MLL draftees who played in the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Championship on Monday. Jordan Wolf (2nd, Rochester), Luke Duprey (4th, New York), Brendan Fowler (14th, Charlotte), Henry Lobb (31st, Charlotte), and Chris Hipps (55th, Charlotte) appeared for Duke, while Steve O’Hara (41st, Ohio) took the field for Notre Dame. Duke won the game by a score of 11-9 to capture its second straight championship title.
8.25: Boston’s goals against average through the first four weeks of the season, the best in the league. The Cannons are currently on pace to break the single season record for goals allowed, which was set at 123 by the Denver Outlaws in 2011.
5: Ohio may be 1-3 on the season, but they’ve only lost those three games by a combined five goals. This team has shown they have the potential to make it to the postseason for the first time in club history, and if they can start winning those close games, they could be a team to watch.
Boston Cannons at New York Lizards
When: Friday, May 30 @ 7:30 PM EST
Syndicated: FS Midwest, FS Oklahoma, Prime Ticket, FS Southwest, MSG+, CSN New England, TWC Wisconsin, Altitude
Last time they met: Boston 16, New York 12 (June 21, 2013 in Boston)
Under the leadership of Jordan Burke, Boston has allowed just 33 goals all season, which is the best in the league. However, the Lizards have one of the strongest scoring offenses in the MLL, so it will be interesting to see which side will win that battle when New York has the ball. Another matchup of strengths will come at the X, as the MLL’s two best face off men, Chris Eck and Greg Gurenlian, will go head to head and fight for possession. New York has all the players for a great team, but they’re still looking for that dominant win to make a statement to the rest of the league.
Charlotte Hounds at Denver Outlaws
When: Friday, May 30 @ 9:30 PM EST
Watch: CBS Sports Network
Last time they met: Denver 17, Charlotte 11 (June 29, 2013 in Denver)
The Hounds likely want to forget their last game after being dominated by Boston and falling 14-6. Unfortunately, it’s not going to get much easier this week, as they have to travel to Denver and face the undefeated Outlaws. Getting goalkeeper Adam Ghitelman back last week should help the Hounds, but this week he’ll have to face four of the league’s top ten scorers in Eric Law, Jeremy Sieverts, Chris Bocklet, and John Grant Jr. This game could prove to be a turning point, as a great game against Denver would be a huge morale boost, but if the Hounds suffer another massive loss like last week, it might be difficult to recover.
Ohio Machine at Chesapeake Bayhawks
When: Saturday, May 31 @ 7:00 PM EST
Watch: CBS Sports Network
Last time they met: Chesapeake 13, Ohio 12 (July 6, 2013 in Delaware, OH)
The Bayhawks had a great fourth quarter last week against Florida, scoring 6 goals and nearly coming back for the win, but the team needs to play like that for a solid 60 minutes if they want to win games and return to the playoffs. Meanwhile, Ohio is actually +3 in goal differential this season, yet they’ve dropped three games. The Machine have shown flashes of a dangerous team, but they haven’t figured out how to pull out a win over a quality opponent. If they can put all the pieces together, they might be able to get rolling this week against Chesapeake.
Florida Launch at Rochester Rattlers
When: Sunday, June 1 @ 1:00 PM EST
Syndicated: Altitude, MSG+, Prime Ticket
Last time they met: first meeting
The Launch continue to impress, and if last week was any indication, the combination of proven star Casey Powell and impressive rookie Kieran McArdle could be a dangerous duo for the remainder of the season. This means John Galloway will have to bring his A-game in the net for the Rattlers, as both of Rochester’s wins this season have come when holding the opponent to single-digit goals. Florida recorded their first road win last week, but we’ll see if a second week away from the warm weather and friendly fans in Boca Raton will cause them to stumble.
New Faces: Now that the NCAA season has ended, all MLL draftees will be free to join the league if they choose to sign with their new team. We’ve already seen major contributions from 2014 draftees like Joe Fletcher and Kieran McArdle, and there’s no doubt that the incoming class could have a huge impact on every MLL team.
Chasing a Record: Kevin Leveille remains just five goals away from tying the MLL All-Time record for career goals, currently held by MLL legend Tim Goettelmann at 270. Leveille will have a chance to get closer to the record this Sunday, when the Rattlers take on the Florida Launch at 1:00 PM.
Spreading Out the Fun: With games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, this weekend will feature three days of great matchups. You can catch all the action on CBS Sports Network or ESPN3.
