Rochester Rattlers attackman Kevin Leveille scored the game-winner in the first ever double-overtime game in MLL History, to give the Rattlers (4-2) an 8-7 win over the Chesapeake Bayhawks (1-5) on Thursday night. With the tally, Leveille broke the MLL All-Time Goal scoring record, previously held by Tim Goettelman. The MLL veteran also tied Goettelman for All-Time game-winning-goals with his 14th career game winner.
In the back-and-forth affair, Chesapeake scored on their first possession in the game with a goal by Matt Mackrides assisted by Ben Hunt. Rochester responded with a quick goal when Jordan MacIntosh hit Mark Matthews on the crease. With just under three minutes left in the first quarter, Joe Walters earned his first point as a Bayhawk in an assist to Ben Rubeor putting Chesapeake up 2-1. The Rattlers then took advantage of a man up opportunity with Leveille’s first of three goals on the night, assisted by Justin Turri, ending the quarter tied at two.
Rubeor put the Bayhawks up again in the second by scoring on an assist from Jeff Reynolds. Rochester answered to tie the game with Matthews finishing off a dish from John LoCascio. Then John Ranagan scored to give Rochester their first lead. Brendan Mundorf tied the game back up with a diving goal for Chesapeake, sending the teams to the locker room tied at four at the half.
To start the second half Hunt gave Chesapeake the 5-4 lead. Daniel Hardy then fed Miles Thompson to tie the game for the Rattlers. Drew Westervelt capitalized on a powerplay with a pass from Walters to give Chesapeake the lead again, while Turri evened the game for Rochester ending the third quarter tied at 6.
The Bayhawks started the fourth quarter by taking the lead again with a goal from Matt Abbott. To even the score again for Rochester, Leveille scored from Hardy sending the game into overtime.
There were plenty of turnovers but no scoring in the first overtime, forcing a second 10-minute period for the first time in MLL history. After more back-and-forth action, Leveille scored the record-breaking game-winner with a little over five minutes left, thanks to a feed from Thompson to give the home team the 8-7 win.
