In the first week of the 2008 season, the Washington Bayhawks will have a chance to rattle the defending champion Philadelphia Barrage.  The last time these two teams matched up, the Barrage took the Bayhawks on in full-force, beating them in back-to-back weekends to end last year’s regular season.  See if the Barrage can begin defending their championship through a successful win or if the Washington Bayhawks will end the Barrage’s winning streak against them.

The Denver Outlaws will be facing off against the Washington Bayhawks in Bayhawk territory
at George Mason University in Virginia.  New coach of Bayhawks, Jarred Testa, will square off against the team he formerly coached for, the Denver Outlaws.  When asked about what it would be like to play against his former team for the first time, Testa stated, “Our focus when playing Denver, or any other team in the league, is going to be on our game, on what we are doing.  We’re going to win some face-offs, take care of the ball and push it to the offense.  I think we will be mentally ready to go.”  General Manager of the Washington Bayhawks, Scott Hiller feels confident in the team’s choosing of Testa as head coach.  Hiller stated, “Jarred possesses all of the outstanding qualifications you would look for in a head coach.”  With high expectations of the new head coach, there is hope for an exciting season.

Week three brings forth an ongoing battle between two California rivals.  The Los Angeles Riptide match up against the San Francisco Dragons giving the Dragons a chance to redeem themselves after last season’s upsetting losses to the Riptide.  Twice the LA Riptide beat the Dragons by identical scores of 14-13.  The Dragons’ scorn from last season may prove to intensify an already challenging, if not difficult game for the 2007 semi-finalist LA team. Watch them face off at San Francisco’s new home in Spartan Stadium located at San Jose State University.  These teams may both hail from laid-back California, but this game will hardly be friendly.

For the first time in Major League Lacrosse history, the Long Island Lizards will go head-to-head against the Los Angeles Riptide at the Home Depot Center, located on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills. In 2007, the Long Island Lizards finished third in the Eastern Conference standings with a 5-7 record, and the Los Angeles Riptide finished first in the Western Conference standings with a 9-3 record.  This first game between the two teams will establish a new MLL relationship, and possibly even a new rivalry. Don’t miss it!

dragons-vs-outlaws.jpgJuly 4: Dragons vs. Outlaws
Last season, the Denver Outlaws were just short of bringing in 20,000 fans to INVESCO Field by only about 200 people when they matched up against the Chicago Machines.  This year, the Outlaws will face the San Francisco Dragons on Independence Day at INVESCO and will hopefully break the previous record of 19,793 fans, the largest crowd in the history of Major League Lacrosse. In celebration of the 4th of July, there will be a fireworks display at the end of the game!

Afer being played in Boston for the past two seasons, the MLL All-Star game will be held in Denver at INVESCO Field at Mile High in July.  Vice President of Edge Sports and Entertainment, Mac Freeman said the MLL All-Star game is “a great reward for our [Denver's] loyal fans.” The Bud Light Skills competition will again be a part of the  program. Skills included in the show this year will be Fastest Shot, Most Accurate, and Free Style. 2007’s fastest shot award was clocked at 104 mph by Denver Outlaws’ Brian Langtry.  This, however, does not beat the fastest shot recorded at 109 mph by former Boston Cannon player Dave Evans in 2004.

Cannons vs. Bayhawks
The Boston Cannons will play against the Washington Bayhawks at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD. The United States Naval Academy is the Alma Mater to many current Major League Lacrosse players and this is the first time that the league has held an event at the facility. The Chicago Machine picked up Steve Looney from the class of 2006 and Billy Looney, 2007. The Long Island Lizards’ Adam Borcz is an alum, and the Los Angeles Riptide scooped up a handful of alumni including Benjamin Bailey 2004, Graham Gill 2005, Michael Jarboe 2000, Christopher Pieczonka 2005, and Matt Russell 2006. Ian Dingman, (2007) now plays for the Philadelphia Barrage, and alumnus Hendler Mitchell currently plays for the San Francisco Dragons. Although none of these players will be facing off in their home stadium on July 19th, they may  have the opportunity to play lacrosse again at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium as professional athletes if this becomes a recurring event.

barrage-vs.-riptide.jpgJuly 26:  Barrage vs. Riptide
The Philadelphia Barrage and the Los Angeles Riptide will play against each other for the first time since the championship game in 2007, but this time the defending champions will have to play on LA’s home turf in at the Home Depot Center. Will the home-team arena give the Riptide an advantage against the Barrage and possibly come out with a win? This will no doubt be an exciting matchup and a chance to see how each team has grown over the last year. Although the 2007 season did not prove to be a championship year for LA, their team was awarded with Coach of the Year, Coach John Tucker, the Most Improved Player, Spencer Ford, and New Balance’s Sportsman of the Year, Greg Bice.

NB ZIP MLL Championship Weekend

Championship Weekend will be held in Boston at Harvard Stadium August 23rd and 24th.  Harvard Stadium has been home to the Boston Cannons since 2007 and was venue for the 2007 MLL All-Star game. With a seating capacity of 30,989, Harvard Stadium is praised for its outstanding sightlines.  The stadium is shaped as a horseshoe and acts as a perfect venue for the Cannons. The Stadium was upgraded in 2006 with the addition of a FieldTurf playing surface, perfect for the MLL, permanent lighting and a removable all-weather bubble which allows use of the facility throughout the calendar year.  This year’s NB ZIP Championship is anticipated to be a great event!
