Bayhawks Win the 2010 MLL Championship

The #4 seeded Chesapeake Bayhawks won their third championship in franchise history after upsetting the #3 seeded Long island Lizards by a score of 13-9.  The Bayhawks’ Kyle Hartzell was named Playoff MVP and became the first defenseman in league history to do so after playing shutdown defense throughout the playoffs.

For the second straight day the Lizards started of strong as Keith Cromwell opened up the scoring by blasting one by Bayhawks goalie Chris Garrity.  Zach Greer extended the Lizards lead to two until the Bayhawks tied it up with goals from Ben Hunt and Danny Glading.  45 seconds later the Lizards pulled back into the lead with a goal by Stephen Peyser.  The score would remain 3-2 until midway into the second quarter when Chris Fiore scored on a powerplay goal.

Danny Glading scored the next goal, pulling the Bayhawks within one.  Peet Poillion tied the game up with a spectacular behind the back goal.  Both team’s defenses held strong and went into half tied at four.  The first half was marred with mistakes from both teams.  The Bayhawks committed four penalties while the Lizards committed two.

In the second half the scoring started early when Chesapeake’s Alex Smith won the faceoff and took the ball down the field for a goal.  The fast pace continued when Greer scored on a powerplay goal.  The Bayhawks answered by scoring their own powerplay goal caused by an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Lizards Brian Spallina.  Long Island finally took the lead with 4:17 left in the third but another behind the back goal by Poillon tied the game up at eight going into the final quarter.

The Bayhawks broke away in the fourth quarter after rookie Brian Carroll scored on a powerplay.  Kyle Dixon followed that up with a rocket shot and then rookie Michael Kimmel scored the third goal of the quarter off a rebound.  Carroll sealed the victory for the Bayhawks when he scored their fifth straight goal to extend their lead to four.

The Bayhawks were led by goalie Chris Garrity who had a combined 27 saves through both games and held each opponent under ten goals.  Peet Poillon had a strong offensive day for the Bayhawks, netting a hat trick.  On the losing end Greer, Peyser and Cromwell each had two goals for the Lizards.

The Bayhawks win the MLL championship for the first time since 2005 since they beat the Lizards by a score of 15-9.  The Bayhawks are now tied with the Philadelphia Barrage for the most championships of an MLL franchise with three.
